Former Dortmund player and sports director Michael Zorc has a new job at BVB. The 62-year-old was elected to the supervisory board with a large majority at the general meeting of shareholders of Borussia Dortmund GmbH & Co. KGaA on Monday. Zorc retired into private life in 2022. Now he is supposed to bring his football expertise to the Bundesliga club’s control committee.

Managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke reported in his last speech to shareholders that he had to spend hours persuading Zorc to run. In the vote, 90.08 percent of shareholders voted for the club’s record player, who lives in Dortmund. Zorc played exclusively for the black and yellow throughout his professional career from 1981 to 1998, after which he worked in management from 1998 to 2022.

In the dispute over an advertising contract with the defense company Rheinmetall, the majority of BVB shareholders have not spoken out against the deal. The umbrella organization of critical shareholders had submitted a motion not to discharge the management because of the contract with the defense company. However, the vast majority (99.84 percent) did not agree.

On Sunday, at the annual general meeting of the registered association Borussia Dortmund, the majority of members spoke out against the contract with Germany’s largest arms company. However, the vote is not binding for the management. The partnership includes the use of high-reach advertising space, marketing rights as well as event and hospitality offers in the stadium and on the club premises. After the deal was announced, there was criticism from pacifists, human rights organizations and some fans.

Rheinmetall is Germany’s largest arms company, which is experiencing strong growth against the backdrop of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine and the general arms boom.
