Pep Guardiola’s future at Manchester City was unclear for a long time, but now the club has certainty: the successful Spanish coach has extended his contract, which expires in 2025, until 2027. According to “Relevo” reporter Matteo Moretto, the agreement contains several unspecified clauses. The 53-year-old will be entering his tenth season with the Citizens next season and can set his sights on further records.

Guardiola joined Manchester City in July 2016 and has since become the most successful coach in the club’s history. He averaged 2.33 points in his 490 games in office and won 19 titles, including six of the ten English championships in the club’s history and the 2023 Champions League. In the 2017/18 season, the Citizens were first and foremost under his leadership today only team that was able to collect 100 points in the Premier League.

Guardiola himself fueled the rumors about his future in May. “The reality is that I am closer to leaving than staying,” he said, but corrected himself a little later and opened up the possibility of a further extension. Now he said: “Manchester City means so much to me. This is my ninth season here; we have had so many great times together. I have a very special feeling for this football club. That’s why I’m so happy that I can stay here for two more seasons.”

Man City’s Guardiola with the best points average in the Premier League

Guardiola is already the fourth longest-serving trainer in Manchester City’s history. No coach in the Premier League has a better average than Guardiola. With 2.35 points per game, he is ahead of Sir Alex Ferguson, who worked for local rivals Manchester United for 21 seasons.

However, when it comes to English championships, he is behind Ferguson. Just like Liverpool legend Bob Paisley, Guardiola won the title six times, the Scot managed to do so 13 times. More could be added due to his contract extension. Man City is currently in a crisis, has lost all of its last five competitive games and is five points behind league leaders Liverpool.
