On Thursday evening, Inter Miami introduced a new coach, Javier Mascherano. Less than 24 hours later, Luis Suárez (37) signed a new contract: The attacker extended his contract, which originally expired at the end of the year, for another year and will therefore continue to hunt for goals in the coming MLS season.
In January, Suárez signed in Miami and met old acquaintances from his time at FC Barcelona in Lionel Messi (37), Jordi Alba (35) and Sergio Busquets (36). At the Catalans he also appeared on the pitch together with his new coach Mascherano in 124 games. Together with Messi, the Uruguayan became his team’s top scorer last season with 20 goals in 27 appearances. Although Inter Miami dominated the Eastern Conference and took first place by eight points, it was over in the first round of the playoffs against Atlanta.
“In 2024, Luis brought all the elements that make him one of the greatest strikers of all time. He played at a top level for us and we look forward to that continuing next season,” said Raúl Sanllehí, club president. “I’m very happy, very excited that I can stay here for another year and enjoy being with these fans who are like family to us. We feel very, very connected to them and hope that we can bring them even more joy next year,” added Suárez.
With 496 goals in 805 games, Suárez is one of the most accurate footballers in history and was twice awarded the Golden Boot as Europe’s top goalscorer. He also scored 69 times in 143 international matches, making him Uruguay’s record goalscorer. The 37-year-old reached his career high of 90 million euros in November 2015. It is quite possible that he will score his 500th goal at club level next season.
