Kevin Strootman has hung up his football boots. “Careers come to an end. Thank you, football!” wrote the 34-year-old defensive midfielder in a brief statement on his social channels. Strootman has been without a club since his contract with Genoa CFC ended in the summer; his most recent market value was 800,000 euros.

The 46-time Dutch international’s highest value was 28 million euros in the summer of 2018 at AS Roma, and he also appeared most often for the Serie A club (131 times). In the meantime, he was repeatedly slowed down by serious injuries.

A total of 47.7 million euros were paid for Strootman in transfer fees, meaning he narrowly missed the top 20 ranking of all Dutch players. Left-footed Strootman won his only club titles in 2012 and 2013 with PSV Eindhoven. He was not granted a World Cup or European Championship appearance.
