He Former Vice President of the Chinese Football Association Li Yuyi has been sentenced to 11 years in prison and fined 1 million yuan ($139,579.03) for taking bribes, state news agency Xinhua reported Monday, citing a court ruling. Li Yuyi’s sentencing follows investigations into more than a dozen top football officials since late 2022.

The sport has long struggled with corruption, which fans have blamed for the national team’s persistent poor performance. In 2012, two former bosses of the same football association were each sentenced to 10-and-a-half years in jail for theft.
