YoKer Muniain is now a new player for San Lorenzo de Almagro. The Spanish attacking midfielder, after a life linked to Athletic Club, joins the Argentine club to try his luck outside of La Liga for the first time… at 31 years old. He arrives as a free agent after finishing his contract with the ‘lions’ and signs with the ‘gauchos’ until December 2025.
With 560 games, one Copa del Rey and two Spanish Super Cups under his belt at Athletic since he made his official debut in July 2009 at the age of 16, everything seemed to indicate that Muniain would leave La Catedral as a ‘one club man’. However, after a few recent seasons in which he gradually lost prominence, club and player decided to part ways on 30 June.
There was speculation about a possible arrival at River Plate. But, finally, he has landed at San Lorenzo de Almagro. According to ‘TyC Sports’, he signed at the offices of Pedro Bidegain accompanied by Marcelo Moretti, his agent, and Richard Willmott, who could have been the key man who has unblocked the situation.
Muniain joins a giant (15 league titles in Argentina) that is not going through its best moment. Since they won the Libertadores in 2014, San Lorenzo has only won one Argentine Super Cup in 2016.
They are currently in 23rd place in the league… although they are starting to take off. They have two consecutive victories, which have allowed them to end a four-match winless streak. An uncharacteristic start for a club that finished third last season and earned a ticket to the Libertadores, from which they were recently eliminated by Atlético Mineiro.
Now, San Lorenzo wants to take advantage of the impact of the arrival of a player like Muniain to finish taking off. He will immediately be under the orders of Leandro Romagnoli and will have time to get into shape. His debut could take place at home on September 16 against leader Vélez.
