Market value update

The Serbian Borisav Burmaz has been slightly downgraded to 1.8 million euros in the market value update in Romania. Half a year after his move to FC Rapid, this is not particularly exciting, but it does result in a notable shift in the top 10 ranking of the most valuable players in the Romanian SuperLiga. 2 million euros, Burmaz’s previous valuation, is a top 10 value, and the striker was the only foreign professional to have such a value. After the update, the ten most valuable players in the SuperLiga are all Romanians. There are no other top leagues in European football that have only local professionals among the ten most valuable.
The biggest winner of the market value update is top scorer Alexandru Mitriţă. The winger left his Romanian club CS Universitatea Craiova in 2019 for MLS club New York City FC for no less than €8 million. Loans to Saudi Arabia and Greece followed, and his market value plummeted. The national player’s value dropped to €2.5 million at times. Last year he finally returned to Craiova on a free transfer and has been steadily rising since then. In the new update, his value has increased by half a million euros to €4 million. Mitriţă has thus consolidated his second place in the league’s market value ranking behind Darius Olaru from FCSB, whose value remains at €7 million. New in the top 10 with now 2 million euros are Burmaz’ Rapid and Olaru’s FCSB colleagues Claudiu Petrila (+200 thousand) and Daniel Bîrligea (+400 thousand).
Mitriţă scored 16 goals and 14 assists for Craiova in the league and championship round last season, collecting significantly more points than in his last season before he left home for the third-highest price in league history at the time, 8 million euros. In the new season, the 20-time national team player has already scored seven goals and provided one assist after eight games in the league and two in the Europa League qualifiers.
How the transfer market values work
The transfer market values are calculated taking into account various pricing models and a strong involvement of the transfer market community, which deals with the values in detailed discussions. The transfer market values are not to be equated with the transfer fees actually paid.
The aim is not to predict a price, but an expected value. When determining the market value, both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant to a certain extent. Examples of this are here Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (for detailed market value definition).
