Masters Bayer Leverkusen would extend the contract with Jonathan Tah (28) if the German international gives up his defensive stance. “It’s always a thing to exclude things in football, there can always be new developments,” said Leverkusen’s sports director Simon Rolfes to the “Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger”.

“At the moment the situation is like this, but we have never ruled anything out. The door is not closed,” Rolfes added. According to the newspaper, a contract extension with a realistic exit clause is a possible option. Players and management are said to be on the lookout for possible clubs for the coming summer, then Tah will be available for free.

Bayer Leverkusen: No Tah farewell in winter

In the summer, the Hamburg native was about to move to FC Bayern, which ultimately didn’t go through. The clubs could not come to an agreement financially. The central defender then made it clear at the start of the season that he would not be extending his contract with Leverkusen. This is valid until June 30, 2025. Leverkusen could therefore only earn money from a Tah change in the next transfer window. “We have no intention of selling Jona in the winter,” Rolfes made clear.

Tah revealed to the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” at the beginning of September that the Werkself bosses approached him after the last season with the message that he had to make a choice: “So I should decide: extend the contract or leave the club. That was the starting point. And then came my part: I informed the club that I would not be extending my contract.” With a market value of 30 million euros, he is one of the most valuable Bundesliga professionals with an expiring contract.
