The transfer window in Turkey closes today at 11 p.m. and this could also be relevant for two Bundesliga clubs. According to information from Turkish journalist Yağız Sabuncuoğlu, Galatasaray is interested in Roland Sallai (27) from SC Freiburg and Rubén Vargas (25) from FC Augsburg. Both were considered transfer candidates at their clubs in the summer and are contractually bound until 2025.

In addition to the established Barış Alper Yılmaz (24), the Turkish champions’ squad includes four wingers, namely Hakim Ziyech (31), who is suffering from a muscle injury, as well as Yusuf Demir (21) and Yunus Akgün (24), but another is to follow. According to Turkish media reports, Sallai has taken pole position, as he has apparently agreed with Galatasaray on a contract until 2028. As Sabuncuoğlu reports, Freiburg has also agreed with the Europa League participant on a transfer fee of 6 million euros, which is to be paid over three years.

Sallai and Vargas in a similar situation: expiring contracts and wildcard role

Sallai came to Freiburg from APOEL Nicosia in August 2018 for €4.5 million and has since played 163 games (27 goals). With a market value of €15 million, he is one of the most valuable professionals in coach Julian Schuster’s squad, but has been repeatedly linked with other clubs such as Leeds United. In the first two Bundesliga games, Ritsu Doan (26) and Vincenzo Grifo (31) were preferred over Sallai. In addition, Eren Dinkçi (22), a new signing costing €5 million, is pushing for a place on the wing. Due to the competition and the expiring contract, a departure cannot be ruled out.

The Swiss European Championship driver Vargas is in a similar situation. He was traded to Stade Rennes and Fiorentina, among others, in the summer. In the 0:4 defeat against Heidenheim on matchday 2, when Vargas was substituted at half-time, he played his only minutes in the Bundesliga so far. At the European Championship, the 26-year-old had put himself in the spotlight with good performances. With a market value of 9 million euros, Vargas is the most valuable player in the Augsburg squad, along with new signing Frank Onyeka (26).
