Sergio Ramos has been looking for a new club since the summer after his contract with Sevilla FC expired. A commitment to Al-Orobah FC in Saudi Arabia did not materialize at the end of August, but now there is a new lead. According to the Spanish newspaper “Relevo”, the veteran defenseman is in talks with Boca Juniors.
Former national player Juan Román Riquelme, who played against Ramos in LaLiga between 2002 and 2007, is president of the traditional Argentine club. A former teammate has also joined the 35-time champions for two weeks: Fernando Gago took over as coach on October 14th from Diego Martínez, who resigned at the end of September. Between 2007 and 2011, the two played 102 games together for Real Madrid.
Now Gago wants to win his former teammate for the struggling club from Buenos Aires, which is only in 16th place out of 28 in the Liga Profesional. According to the report, a contract is being discussed on January 1st and thus after the end of the season in Argentina. The sticking point is likely to be the salary. Boca are reportedly offering around 5 million euros, less than half of what Ramos is said to have earned in Sevilla (11 million euros). He could also have significantly exceeded this amount in Saudi Arabia.
Ramos currently has other offers from the United Arab Emirates, all of which the central defender rejects. The report does not say whether the world and European champion could imagine moving to Argentina. In his career, Ramos has only played in Spain for Real Madrid (671 appearances) and Sevilla FC (87) and in France for Paris Saint-Germain (58).
