Just six months and one assignment after moving to AS Roma last summer, Mathew Ryan is moving on to RC Lens. The 32-year-old goalkeeper will use his experience to replace Brice Samba (30), who moved to Stade Rennes. Ryan signed a contract until the end of the season and is reportedly worth 800,000 euros.
For the Australian, who left his homeland for Europe to join FC Brugge in 2013, it is the twelfth stop in the eighth country. Ryan played most of the games for Brighton & Hove Albion. From 2017 to 2021, the 96-time international was between the posts 123 times for the Seagulls. In 2019 it reached its highest market value of 10 million euros. According to the most recent update in Series A, this is 2.5 million euros.
Behind Roma regular goalkeeper Mile Svilar (25), there was little chance of playing time for Ryan. His only appearance came in December when Roma won 4-1 against Sampdoria Genoa in the Coppa Italia. “Mathew is a complete goalkeeper known for his leadership and values. “He fits perfectly into the profile we were looking for to strengthen our goalkeeping team,” said Lens general director Pierre Dréossi.
As a replacement, Roma are about to sign Pierluigi Gollini (29), who is currently on loan to Genoa CFC from Atalanta Bergamo.
