In the 2022/23 season, Manchester City (squad value: 1.05 billion) won the treble and Lionel Messi crowned his career with the World Cup title. In addition, Chelsea FC (1.02 billion) set a new spending record and FC Bayern (980 million) secured the German championship shortly before the final whistle. As part of the 20th anniversary of market values, Transfermarkt looks back on this season.

Kylian Mbappé from Paris Saint-Germain (883 million) was able to confirm his status as the most valuable footballer in the world with a market value of 180 million. He scored eight goals at the World Cup in Qatar, including a hat-trick in the final against Argentina. At club level, the Frenchman was involved in 51 goals in 43 games – only Erling Haaland, who moved to Man City from Borussia Dortmund (548 million) for 60 million before the season, was ahead of him. The Norwegian scored 52 times in 53 appearances and prepared nine goals. Its market value climbed to 170 million euros and was also increased to 180 million in June – i.e. during the season but after the end of sporting operations.
The most professionals in the most valuable selection were Real Madrid (871 million), who had to admit defeat to Man City in the semi-finals of the Champions League. Thibaut Courtois, Federico Valverde and Vinicius Junior made it into the team for the first time. Three Bundesliga professionals were represented: Bayern professionals Alphonso Davies and Matthijs de Ligt as well as Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham. In addition to Haaland, Rúben Dias from the Citizens was also there.
Chelsea with record spending – Premier League invests more than all top leagues
The transfer market in the 2022/23 season was dominated by investments by Chelsea FC, which was entering its first season under the new owners led by US entrepreneur Todd Boehly. The Blues invested a total of 630 million euros on 17 new signings, including 121 million euros in January for world champion Enzo Fernández, who became the most expensive transfer of the season. Manchester United had the second highest expenditure (859 million) with 243 million euros.
In the top 10 clubs with the highest investments were nine clubs from the Premier League, in which a total of 3.16 billion euros were paid for new players. The four other top leagues Serie A, LaLiga, Bundesliga and Ligue 1 signed new professionals for a cumulative total of 2.8 billion euros and therefore together had less expenditure than the Premier League.
In the Bundesliga, where FC Bayern wrested the title from BVB on the last matchday, Jude Bellingham was the most valuable professional with a market value of 120 million euros, followed by the most valuable German, Jamal Musiala, with 110 million euros.
