In the 2010/11 season, FC Barcelona were crowned Champions League winners for the third time in the final against Manchester United and also dominated the Spanish league. The Red Devils consoled themselves with their 19th Premier League title, making them the sole English record champions. And in the Bundesliga, Borussia Dortmund secured their first championship trophy since 2002 – it was the first major trophy for coach Jürgen Klopp and the starting point of his world career.
As part of the 20th anniversary of market values, Transfermarkt looks at the most valuable professionals of every season since 2004, and in 2010/11 Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo played in a league of their own. Messi, who was again awarded the Ballon d’Or, set a market value milestone that season and became the first footballer to break the 100 million euro mark.
Real Madrid’s Ronaldo remained close on his heels with 90 million euros. This balance of power was also reflected in the ranking of the top scorers: While Messi was at the top with 80 direct goal involvements in 55 games, Ronaldo shone with 71 scorers in 54 competitive games.
The squad values of Barça (554 million) and Los Blancos (515 million) were also the measure of all things at the time, followed by Chelsea (424 million), Man City (390 million) and Man United (387 million). FC Bayern (295 million), BVB (147 million) and Bayer 04 (141 million) were in different spheres.

With a gap of 25 million and 30 million euros respectively, Ronaldo is followed by Barça’s Xavi (65 million) and Andrés Iniesta (60 million), who were crowned world champions in the summer of 2010, before Man United’s Wayne Rooney and Arsenal Cesc Fàbregas (both 55 million) are the first professionals from England to be found. Rooney scored the only goal for United in the premier class final in a 3-1 defeat against Barcelona. In addition to him, Red Devil Nemanja Vidic (37 million) also made it into the most valuable eleven of the season, which is dominated by the Catalans, as defender Gerard Piqué (35 million) is also represented.
A German or a player from the Bundesliga was once again not in the team because the international competition was too great. Especially on the offensive: Although the Bayern professionals Franck Ribéry, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Arjen Robben were among the 15 most valuable footballers in the world that season with market values of 45 million and 40 million euros, they had against the stars from the Premier League and LaLiga are left behind.
