In the 2021/22 season, FC Bayern won the Bundesliga for the tenth time in a row and RB Leipzig celebrated its first major title with a triumph in the DFB Cup over SC Freiburg. In addition, Robert Lewandowski and Erling Haaland’s time in Germany ended. As part of the 20th anniversary of market values, Transfermarkt looks at this season.
FC Bayern secured the championship with an eight point lead over Borussia Dortmund. In addition to cup winners RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen, Eintracht Frankfurt also qualified for the Champions League because the Hessians won the Europa League. Arminia Bielefeld and Greuther Fürth had to go to the 2nd Bundesliga, Hertha BSC managed to stay in the relegation game against Hamburger SV.
In his last season in the Bundesliga, Lewandowski became top scorer for the seventh time with 35 goals in 34 appearances – the Pole is second in the Bundesliga’s all-time top scorer list with 312 goals in 384 games. He was followed by Patrik Schick (24), Erling Haaland (22), Christopher Nkunku and Anthony Modeste (both 20). Haaland’s market value climbed to 150 million euros, making him the most valuable footballer in Bundesliga history.
In addition to the Norwegian, the most valuable eleven of the 2021/22 season included two other BVB professionals, Jude Bellingham and Gregor Kobel. The remaining eight all wore Bayern jerseys. The Munich resident with the highest market value was Joshua Kimmich with 90 million euros.
Leipzig spends the most – BVB pockets 85 million for Sancho
The highest spender was RB Leipzig, which signed new players for 126 million euros, including Josko Gvardiol from Dinamo Zagreb and André Silva from Eintracht Frankfurt. In return, the Saxons had to let go of regulars like Dayot Upamecano, Marcel Sabitzer and Ibrahima Konaté. Upamecano moved to FC Bayern for 42.5 million euros and became the most expensive transfer this season.
The most expensive departure was Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho, whom Manchester United signed for 85 million euros. In addition, David Alaba left FC Bayern for Real Madrid after 431 appearances.
