Update in Liga MX

After the Major League Soccer at the end of September, Transfermarkt has now also subjected the second major North American league to an interim update: the Liga MX. In total, the market values of 101 players will be updated, marking some significant moves among the most valuable footballers in Mexico’s upper echelon. The leaders Érick Sánchez (25; Club América), Juan Brunetta (27; Tigres UANL) and Sergio Canales (33; Monterrey) will all be redlined, while Cruz Azul newcomer Georgios Giakoumakis (29) is closing in on the front.
With a loss of 2.5 million euros – the largest in the league – to 7.5 million euros, mainly due to age, ex-Real Betis player Canales loses his status as one of the three most valuable in the league, but Sánchez and Brunetta can do so despite a decline of one million to 9 million euros each to maintain their top position. They now share this with Giakoumakis, who came to Cruz Azul from Atlanta for 9.33 million euros in the summer.
“The Greek striker raised great expectations with his arrival in Liga MX and quickly made a name for himself. Despite an injury at the start of the season, the 29-year-old has already played nine games, scoring five goals and providing three assists,” explains Osvaldo González Camacho, area manager at Transfermarkt Mexico, the increase from one million to 9 million euros.
Market value update Liga MX: Former MLS talent Barajas on the rise
Chivas talent Fidel Barajas is also on the rise. The 18-year-old was featured in the Transfermarkt talent calendar a year ago and has enjoyed a steep rise since then. The winger first moved from Charleston Battery to Real Salt Lake in the MLS in January for a good one million euros and again six months later to Chivas for 4 million euros. This transfer now also affects the Mexican’s market value.
“Barajas was welcomed to Deportivo Guadalajara with great expectations after costing so much, which now increases his valuation from 2 million to 3 million euros,” Camacho reasons. “However, he won’t go any higher as his performance continues to be put to the test. In just four short appearances he accumulated a total of 68 minutes of playing time.”
Recently, ex-Herthan player Javairô Dilrosun (26), who has been playing for CF América since February, has only played irregularly. This causes its market value to fall from 4 million to 3.5 million euros. Two-time Europa League winner Lucas Ocampos (30), whom Monterrey brought from Sevilla FC for 7.25 million euros, has only been in Mexico for a few weeks. Its market value is now adjusted to this sum, from 9 million euros it goes down to 7.5 million euros. Nothing changes for the only German legionnaire in Liga MX, ex-Stuttgart player Mateo Klimowicz (24; Atlético de San Luis), he remains at 1.8 million euros.
This is how transfer market market values work
The transfer market market values are created taking into account various pricing models as well as a strong involvement of the transfer market community, which deals with the values in detailed discussions. The transfer market market values cannot generally be equated with the transfer fees actually paid.
The goal is not to predict a price, but rather an expected value. When determining the market value, both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant to a certain extent. Examples of this will be here listed. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (for a detailed definition of market value).
