At the beginning of July, FC Bayern paid 23.5 million euros to VfB Stuttgart for all-round defender Hiroki Ito, excluding any other possible bonuses – but the 25-year-old Japanese will probably have to wait a while longer for his competitive debut. In Munich’s friendly against 1. FC Düren (1:1) on Sunday, Ito had to be substituted after 21 minutes due to injury. Sports director Max Eberl told Bild afterwards: “The metatarsal is probably broken. He will therefore be out for a long time.”
Update 6:54 p.m.: Shortly afterwards, Bayern confirmed the diagnosis. Ito will be out for “several weeks.” Eberl said: “That is of course very bitter. We will give Hiroki the best possible support so that he can be back on the pitch in top shape as quickly as possible.”
Ito has signed a contract with Bayern that is valid until 2028. He was replaced by Moroccan Adam Aznou (18; Correction: initially it said Spaniard) onto the field.
