The International Basketball Federation confirmed that Spain (Madrid) has presented its candidacy to host the EuroBasket 2029. In a decision that had already been announced by the FEB and has favoritism, as Elisa Aguilar confessed, president of the federation. In the competition announcement, cities have not yet been specified, being Madrid, the one in Spain and with many options to host both a group stage and the continental title matches.

There is eight proposals from which the four hosts of the groups and the final phase will emerge. Furthermore, their teams will be classified directly and will not be played in the Windows. In addition to Spainthe candidacies are from Estonia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Lithuania, Netherlands and Slovenia.
“The fact of receiving eight proposals is a demonstration of the reach of an event like this in Europe. Our federations embrace the multi-venue format. Both as an engine of growth as a way of develop the sport in every corner of the continent,” said Kamil Novak, executive director of FIBA Europe. Since 2015, it has been the format to be followed by the championship and 2025 will have Riga (Latvia), Limassol (Cyprus), Katowice (Poland) and Tampere (Finland) as cities. The Suomi country, curiously, also asks for 2029.

As for the 2029 candidates, the Netherlands and Estonia have never hosted such a championship. All other countries do. Greece is the one that finds its precedent the furthest away (1995), Lithuania was in 2011 (gold from Spain), Slovenia in 2013 and Germany was the final host of the last one in 2022 (also title for the selection).

Spain is after Greece the one that is furthest from the last occasion in which it organized the main continental tournament. It was that remembered edition of 2007, where Russia won gold against the then world champion after a great game by Andrei Kirilenko, the decisive basket by the talented JR Holden and a forced shot by Pau Gasol that bordered on a miracle. For 2029, Madrid leads the bets.
