“I really appreciate what I have. I love to work for the best club in the world. But I’m not a coach who signs for three years to have a safe future,” said Flick at the press conference before the away game at the relegation candidate CD Leganés on Saturday (9 p.m.). “My mentality is to take one year after another. I want to finish the year and see what happens. We will go step by step to see if we are all satisfied.”
He wanted to focus on the end of the season, and flicked up possible contract talks. “I don’t know how long, but I want to end my work positively. We focus on this season because there is still a lot to do. I want to work that way.” Flick cleared any misunderstandings out of the way in advance. “I enjoy Barcelona very much with my wife. I have a lot of energy and many ideas for improvement, because I think the team still has a lot of potential.”
It is about keeping the tension up against supposedly weak opponents like Leganés. “If you want to become a master, you have to show this in these games, not only in big games. Even against this kind of teams that play for relegation,” warned Flick. The next game is always the hardest. “We have to play with the same mentality and attitude as in a Champions League game. For me it is important that we show our shape.” No matter who is on the pitch.
