In a Youth League game more than two years ago, Real Madrid’s Marc Cucalón was injured so badly that he is now giving up his long-term comeback efforts. At the age of 19, the midfielder from Aragon announced the end of his career on Tuesday.

“After several complications, this injury forced me to make the difficult decision to say goodbye to football, at least as I always dreamed of,” the teenager said on Instagram. The accident happened on September 6, 2022 in a Youth League group game against Celtic Glasgow (6-0). “For the last two years I have struggled physically and mentally with all my strength and tried everything in my power to be able to enjoy this sport again, but I have not been able to recover,” Cucalón wrote. “But don’t get me wrong: this isn’t a sad farewell at all. Finally, I think I had a real privilege to be part of the best club in the world and to have lived a dream.”

As a 16-year-old, Cucalón entered the Real academy “with a backpack full of dreams,” as he put it. He is grateful to everyone who accompanied him on the journey and proud that his family was able to see him on the football field. The Real chapter ended in July and Cucalón has been without a club since then. Next Saturday he will be 20 years old.
