Frankfurt am Main in April 2023: 145 people ask themselves the questions of the player consultant examination introduced by FIFA. Nadine Wolters is one of the successful test subjects – a previously unknown face in the industry. However, 48 percent cannot make it. In the meantime, the native of Wolfsburg has established herself and participated in the change of an Osnabr\u00fcck promotion hero. In the transfer market interview, the 29-year-old talks about her path to the player consultant, prejudices and work for her agency.<\/p>\n

Transfermarkt:<\/strong> Ms. Wolters, they assert themselves in an industry that is still dominated by men. What prejudices or clich\u00e9s do you meet in your daily work?<\/p>\n

Nadine Wolters:<\/strong> I can’t even say that as a woman as a woman I felt affected by prejudices. I have never had the feeling of having a disadvantage – for example, that someone is less responding to me or I don’t get the same answer as a man.<\/p>\n

Transfermarkt: <\/strong>Consultant, mediator, agent – how do you like to describe yourself?<\/p>\n

Wolters:<\/strong> As a player consultant.<\/p>\n

Transfermarkt: <\/strong>Regardless of the term: Few jobs are so controversial in professional football. How do you feel the reputation of the industry?<\/p>\n

Wolters:<\/strong> I don’t have the feeling that the clubs are biased. As in any other job, it depends on how to appear yourself, what you represent, how professionally you work. But: In the private sector I rather encounter the known prejudices. In fact, I encounter the people there more critically than in my work.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Wolters from business administration via the public service to the player advisor<\/h2>\n

Transfermarkt: <\/strong>When was it for you that you wanted to work as a player advisor?<\/p>\n

Wolters:<\/strong> That quickly developed. I started in our agency in the Player Service area and took care of the players. So for administrative things, insurance, taxes – all possible aspects in which players need support. The exchange with my colleagues gets you a lot. I was interested in it from the start, got involved and also got the freedom and trust. Then everything went very quickly – and I was right in the middle of it.<\/p>\n

Transfermarkt: <\/strong>What is your professional career?<\/p>\n

Wolters:<\/strong> After graduating from high school I studied dual business administration, since then I have been working in the public service for a subsidiary of the city of Wolfsburg. I look after companies, do network work, take care of the companies and represent their interests. Three years ago I came to football through the Player Service.<\/p>\n

Transfermarkt: <\/strong>Do you have contacts with other consultants?<\/p>\n

Wolters:<\/strong> I met Lena Goe\u00dfling, who is a player advisor for women. In men’s football I have actually not met any other player consultant. I only had a conversation with the sports director of a German professional association yesterday. He told me that before the appointment he thought about the contract with which a consultant was involved: he didn’t think of any. I often hear that.<\/p>\n

Transfermarkt: <\/strong>Which clients do you represent and which transfers were involved?<\/p>\n

Wolters:<\/strong> I work for Trois sports management, the headquarters are in Aachen. Trois has two pillars: training and management. We accompany and develop the players such as Clinton Mata, which we trained early. In the meantime we have also founded a football school in Wolfsburg. But we have no clear assignment and don’t say: This is my player, this is your player. We take care of all the actors who are listed with the transfer market. I was the most active in the past changes from Ba-Muaka Simakala. He rose to the 2nd league with VfL Osnabr\u00fcck in 2023 and was a kind of promotion hero there. Then he switched to Holstein Kiel.<\/p>\n

Transfermarkt: <\/strong>Do you also represent players?<\/p>\n

Wolters:<\/strong> Unfortunately not. So far I have no network in this area. In men’s football, on the other hand, I have a good network that I expand and care. But I like to work with women and would be happy to have to do with women as a consultant.<\/p>\n

Transfermarkt: <\/strong>Silke Sinning, the President of the Hessian Football Association and DFB Vice President, Ingolstadt trainer Sabrina Wittmann or DFB press spokeswoman Franziska W\u00fclle are examples of women in top positions. Is there something like a women’s network in football?<\/p>\n

Wolters:<\/strong> I hope there is one – and I just don’t know it yet. I would be very popular there and would exchange more with women from the industry. I really appreciate women’s networks and know them in my other professional context. I am not yet in such a network in sports – which does not have to mean that it does not exist.<\/p>\n

Transfermarkt: <\/strong>About her everyday work: What does a “normal” week look like in the life of a player advisor?<\/p>\n

Wolters:<\/strong> On the one hand, my week consists of my main job. Depending on what is going on, I work as a player consultant in the evening or on weekends. I am in the stadium almost every weekend. I usually try to see a game of one of our clients or to go to a game in the area. If it fits, I am in our football school on Sundays and watch the children during training. I like to be on the road and spontaneously.<\/p>\n

Transfermarkt: <\/strong>They live in their hometown Wolfsburg. Is there a special connection to the VfL?<\/p>\n

Wolters:<\/strong> I definitely have a special connection to the city. I feel comfortable here and really like to live here. My parents used to have a season ticket, I was already in the stadium as a child. I never had a season ticket myself, but I am happy when VfL celebrates victories.<\/p>\n

Transfermarkt: <\/strong>What is a good player advisor?<\/p>\n

Wolters:<\/strong> I approach the job as I work in my other job. It is important to me to be professional. What you always say about player advisors – a lot is going on in the back, it is all about money – I don’t notice that. It is important to me that it is about the interests of the player. I perceive it as a job that can be done reasonably and professionally.<\/p>\n

Transfermarkt: <\/strong>For a long time there have been discussions about the question of how strongly the market for consultants should be regulated. What is your point of view?<\/p>\n

Wolters:<\/strong> Basically, it cannot hurt to question and test in his job to continue to train themselves. This requires the license: to familiarize yourself with the rules. I have no problem with that. That makes sense – and that is in many jobs. For example, I really got on with the license.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Player advisor Wolters considers FIFA examination meaningful<\/h2>\n

Transfermarkt: <\/strong>In 2023 you successfully passed the exam for the player consultant in Frankfurt. How demanding were the questions?<\/p>\n

Wolters:<\/strong> The test was feasible if you dealt with the topic with which the set of rules – what you should do anyway. It was a multiple choice test. But you can’t sit down unprepared and shake the solutions out of your sleeve for good luck.<\/p>\n

Wolters:<\/strong> Yes. I already have the feeling that it makes a difference when I say: I have a license. I can recommend it to everyone.<\/p>\n

Transfermarkt: <\/strong>To your professional goals: one day do you want to conduct your own agency?<\/p>\n

Wolters:<\/strong> I would like to continue to have a firm pillar in football. I don’t know whether I want to lead an agency. I feel very comfortable in our agency because we all work together at eye level. So I wish it in the future – no matter what role I take.<\/p>\n

Transfermarkt: <\/strong>If you could choose a player as a client, that would be …<\/p>\n

Wolters:<\/strong> (laughs)<\/em> I didn’t prepare for this question. Spontaneously, of course, players like Jamal Musiala come to mind. Every consultant would like to look after him. But regardless of the sporting quality of a player: it is very nice if it fits on the human level when you trust yourself and you accompany people as a consultant.<\/p>\n
