Defender Waldemar Anton switched from VfB Stuttgart to Borussia Dortmund last summer for 22.5 million euros. In the transfer market interview, the 28-year-old reacts to the clear demands of sports director Sebastian Kehl and speaks about the reasons for the weak BVB season, unfulfilled expectations, an unprecedented section in his career, the big praise of Niko Kovac and honest conversations with Julian Nagelsmann.<\/p>\n

Transfermarkt: <\/strong>Mr. Anton, Sebastian Kehl recently made a clear announcement at the “Ruhr Nachrichten”: “In the next few weeks we will see exactly which player Borussia Dortmund can also build on in the future. (…) If you don’t take the right attitude to the day, you will not have any perspective in this club.” Are you one of the players that BVB can build on in the future?<\/p>\n

Waldemar Anton:<\/strong> I was fetched because I want to go ahead. It is a basic requirement in football that everyone accelerates and tries to go to their limit. That is the most important thing. And the older players have to go ahead.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Transfermarkt:<\/strong> Because of the weak season at the national level, a greater upheaval in the summer is setting up in order to reunite the hunger for success in the team. Is that necessary?<\/p>\n

Anton: <\/strong>In the end, those responsible decide and not me. We players are responsible for working in the team and that everyone contributes to their part. We can influence these things.<\/p>\n

Transfermarkt:<\/strong> Was it clear to you that you should be a cornerstone of the team next season? Or is that not necessary because you assume anyway?<\/p>\n

Anton:<\/strong> I was taken before the season to take on a leadership role. I try to fill them out – even in phases in which things are not going well. Of course, we clearly speak internally what works and what needs to be better. And it is one of my strengths that I want to take responsibility. We also have a lot of young players. I am one of the older ones, so it’s normal to do that.<\/p>\n

Transfermarkt:<\/strong> From your point of view, why does BVB experience a disappointing season?<\/p>\n

Anton:<\/strong> It is difficult to correctly classify the reasons. We had a lot of injuries at the beginning of the season. That shouldn’t be an excuse, but it played a big role. In many games it didn’t work the way we imagined it. Sometimes maybe the little bit of luck was missing. But we have to be honest: in too many games it was just too little. I am a friend to say that the basics have to be right. If this is the case, you will also get the bit of luck back. Football is a result sport, and if you only play for 60 minutes, you may be gaining and losing two or three goals in the remaining 30 minutes. We have rarely managed to bring our performance to the square for over 90 minutes. What was that? Difficult to explain. But it is clear: if things don’t go, each of us players has to question themselves. But that was also done so that it goes back in the right direction.<\/p>\n

BVB defender Anton: Only together we can get out of the crisis<\/h2>\n

Transfermarkt:<\/strong> Kehl said that it now needs “men who want to challenges who are aggressive and do not hide. The fans want to see that, we owe them to them.” Was there too little of it in the past?<\/p>\n

Anton:<\/strong> If the results are not correct, it is normal and justified that there is criticism. We have to face that too. It is important that you clearly name what is not good and how you can do it better. We do that. And if you appeal to this and can be criticized, we can get out of the situation together. This is only possible together.<\/p>\n

Transfermarkt: <\/strong>There should be one or the other controversial character in the team.<\/p>\n

Anton:<\/strong> There are situations in every team in which not everyone has the same opinion, but that is completely normal in a team sport. A little friction is good too, I say. Nevertheless, we all get along very well. It is part of it and is also normal for me to be dissatisfied if you don’t play or have played a bad game.<\/p>\n

Transfermarkt:<\/strong> The sports director confirmed that the player contracts have been “significantly more performance -oriented”. Sporty failure – the mission of international business – goes hand in hand with a lower salary, and 20 percent less is reported. What do you think of it?<\/p>\n

Anton:<\/strong> In the end, everyone signed their contract under the agreed conditions. It is up to us whether we are successful or not.<\/p>\n

Transfermarkt:<\/strong> At the market value update, BVB was most frequently scheduled for red pencil, eight players received a minus. They fell from 24 million to 18 million euros. Fair or too hard?<\/p>\n

Anton:<\/strong> If you don’t play a good season and have remained under expectations, it is understandable and completely normal. To be honest, I don’t pay attention to the numbers. (smiles)<\/em><\/p>\n

Transfermarkt:<\/strong> Have the expectations associated with your BVB transfer arrived?<\/p>\n

Anton:<\/strong> My personal expectations have not yet fulfilled, unfortunately I have not yet fulfilled it. You have to be so honest. Of course I was already injured three times this season, that’s a lot for my conditions – but that shouldn’t be an excuse. Even as a team, we have not yet achieved our common goals. But that’s how football is. You can’t want this, you have to work hard for it. It would be wrong to re -enact something. We have to draw our conclusions from it – and see that we get the best possible out of this season.<\/p>\n

Transfermarkt:<\/strong> What percentage of the best Waldemar Anton have the BVB fans have seen so far?<\/p>\n

Anton:<\/strong> I’m not where I want to be yet. There is much more. It was not an easy season for me either. I didn’t have a real rhythm of play. In any case, it is more in me than the fans currently see from me.<\/p>\n

Transfermarkt:<\/strong> How do you see your role in the team a year after your arrival?<\/p>\n

Anton:<\/strong> When I see something, I talk to it. I’m not afraid of it, even if I haven’t played for a few weeks. I have no problems with that. I arrived quite well in Dortmund and do everything as I always did.<\/p>\n

Transfermarkt:<\/strong> What do weak performance or results and the associated negative feedback do with you? Are you someone who can check something like this immediately?<\/p>\n

Anton:<\/strong> After a not so good game, I think about it, but as soon as I am at home, I switch off my family with the children. The next day is important. Then you have to work up the last game well and then tick off. After all, the next games come. You need a clear head for that.<\/p>\n

Anton experiences \u201cvery intensive\u201d time at BVB <\/h2>\n

Transfermarkt:<\/strong> Are you currently experiencing the most intense time of your career in Dortmund?<\/p>\n

Anton:<\/strong> To be honest, it is very intense. I had a time when I didn’t play much, that was not easy. That was a phase in my career that I have never had. If I can draw the right conclusions from it, I would be happy to take it with me. You have to see it positively. I always tell myself that everything has a reason.<\/p>\n

Transfermarkt:<\/strong> How challenging is the tight BVB Termalender for your head?<\/p>\n

Anton:<\/strong> Of course this is exhausting for the head. But I will certainly not complain that we can play in the Champions League. And we still have the opportunity to switch off on days off. It is important to do that in order to get away from football. This is very important after such a turbulent phase and what is still due. That was very difficult at the beginning because I didn’t know this intensity, but now it has settled down.<\/p>\n

Transfermarkt:<\/strong> Coach Niko Kovac said about her: “He impresses me. Humanly he is very high. You would give 100 percent in every training session, a role model for everyone. “This is how you behave and wait for your chance.” How did you do that?<\/p>\n

Anton:<\/strong> It’s nice to get such a praise. But I just stayed myself. (laughs)<\/em> Of course you can be angry about your own location. But I learned from experience. I experienced players who sat on the bench and still brought positive energy in – and I know some of them. This helps the team to be much more than angry and disappointed and not to give full throttle in training. That makes no sense for yourself. If you don’t get yourself to the level of others who start and always play. If you then get the chance, you would drop out in terms of performance. That’s why you always have to be ready.<\/p>\n

Transfermarkt:<\/strong> VfB boss Alexander Wehrle, who was “a bit disappointed” about her departure, said at TM in mid-February: “I can understand that many fans were just as we were touched. But for me, the focus is on that Waldi was a very important factor in getting 73 points. Just because he did not forget his contribution in this outstanding season.” Sounds like conciliatory words.<\/p>\n

Anton:<\/strong> Absolutely. These are nice words. I had incredible years in Stuttgart. I wish the boys the very best and hope that they would get the trophy.<\/p>\n

Transfermarkt:<\/strong> Now you have been in Dortmund for a year of three quarters. What is your feeling at BVB?<\/p>\n

Anton:<\/strong> We imagined the season differently, but talks take place with each other, trust is built up. The situation does not just pass the players as everyone thinks. As a family – I with my wife and the two children – you need a little longer to really feel good. I have noticed that now. But everything is in the green and is getting better. And if you success in your job Rich is, it is easier to feel comfortable. This is the case in every job. <\/p>\n

Transfermarkt:<\/strong> In contrast to the home European Championships 2024, they were most recently missing in the squad of the German national team. Would you have nominated yourself?<\/p>\n

Anton:<\/strong> It would not have been fair if I had nominated myself. (laughs)<\/em> The decision was definitely understandable. I hardly played in the phase. I also talked to the national coach about it, he clearly communicated the reason. Honesty is important to me. And the national coach was honest. In the end, it counts to stand in the club on the pitch and to perform. That is the prerequisite.<\/p>\n

Transfermarkt:<\/strong> They witnessed the European Championships in Germany up close and stood on the pitch for half an hour at the bitter quarter-final ko against Spain-also in Stuttgart. What memories have stuck particularly?<\/p>\n

Anton:<\/strong> Especially the last goal of the Spaniards was so extremely bitter. To see the positive: it was an incredible experience, you couldn’t imagine that before. However, the quarter-finals with the associated story was difficult to process. In the end we didn’t win.<\/p>\n

And Anton is not the worst, if not yet on the same level.

Anton:<\/strong> I would like to get a title from an early age. I absolutely want to achieve this goal. In the very first line, it is important to stay healthy and to develop steadily. Whether it is one or two percent does not matter. You have to keep going.<\/p>\n
