Derrick K\u00f6hn has had a very turbulent year: In February 2024, the full -back from second division Hannover 96 to Galatasaray Istanbul, only six months later it went on loan to SV Werder Bremen. The Hamburg-born in Hamburg knew how to convince both on the Bosphorus and on the Easter dike, and the green-whites have been available from Gr\u00fcn-Wei\u00dfen since the change at the end of August 17 out of 18 possible league operations and four scorers. Where it will continue for the 25-year-old with the fine left foot in summer, it is open.<\/p>\n

In the transfer market interview, K\u00f6hn has recapitulated the past twelve months, talks about his familiarization time at the Weser, the relationship with coach Ole Werner and Werder’s ambitions in the second half of the season. The defender takes a look into the future and comments on the national team of Ghanas and the DFB, his dream of the Champions League and the belief in creating something special with Werder.<\/p>\n

Transfer market<\/strong>: About a year ago they moved from Hannover 96 to Galatasaray – now they are regular players in the Bundesliga. Back then was it the plan to play even more into the focus of an international club like Gala in this country than it might be possible via Hannover 96 at the time?<\/p>\n

Derrick K\u00f6hn<\/strong>: The move to Galatasaray was a valuable chance that I wanted to use. The association has a remarkable tradition, a passionate fan base and a strong international presence. My goal was to develop me in sports, and Gala was the right step.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Transfer market<\/strong>: The time in Istanbul was not long, but quite successful. What is your balance sheet today?<\/p>\n

Old<\/strong>: I was able to develop in sports, play at a high level and win titles as a regular player. As a Turkish champion and Supercup winner, I like to look back on this phase. The atmosphere in the stadium, the passion of the fans and the people around the club have made this experience something nice for me.<\/p>\n

Transfer market<\/strong>: To what extent did you bring the move to Turkey as a footballer, perhaps also as a person?<\/p>\n

Old<\/strong>: Since I already had a foreign station in the Netherlands, it was not completely new to me to live in another country and adapt. Nevertheless, Turkey was a completely different challenge again – culturally, linguistic and sporty. As a result, I not only learned as a footballer, but also matured as a person.<\/p>\n

Transfer market<\/strong>: The summer transfer to Werder on Deadline Day 2024 passed on the last minute and under curious circumstances. Why did you decide to take the step? And were there other considerations?<\/p>\n

Old<\/strong>: The change was a sporting decision based on several factors. The Bundesliga is one of the strongest leagues in the world, and Werder showed me a clear concept and a perspective on how I can develop here. The conversations with Ole Werner and with Clemens Fritz and Peter Niemeyer were very positive and made me feel that I can play an important role here. In addition, Werder’s style of play fits me very well, which made the decision easier for me. Another point was that I am geographically closer to my family. There were also other options, but the combination of a sporting challenge, the right playing style and the proximity to my family was the decisive factor for Werder.<\/p>\n

K\u00f6hn about Werder: “Guide a clear concept and family atmosphere”<\/h2>\n

Transfer market<\/strong>: They were among the absolute winners in the Werder squad during the first half of the season, and quickly earned a regular place. How did you find the first few months at Werder from a purely sporting point of view? Why did it go so well for them?<\/p>\n

Old<\/strong>: I found the early days here to be very positive. I was able to fit into the team quickly because the style of play suits me well and I immediately felt the coach’s trust. The clear guidelines and the interaction with my teammates helped me to bring my game onto the pitch. In addition, through my previous stations, I already had the experience of quickly adapting new environments and game systems. All of this contributed to the fact that things went well for me from the start.<\/p>\n

Transfer market<\/strong>: What do you particularly appreciate about the club, the city, the teammates …?<\/p>\n

Old<\/strong>: I particularly appreciate the clear concept and the family atmosphere at the club. You can tell that everyone works for success and the cohesion is great. The city of Bremen has its own charm – it is clear, pleasantly quiet and you quickly feel comfortable. At my teammates, I particularly appreciate the open handling and the good atmosphere within the team, which makes daily work on and next to the square very pleasant.<\/p>\n

Transfer market<\/strong>: How do you characterize Ole Werner as a trainer, how would you describe your relationship?<\/p>\n

Old<\/strong>: Ole Werner attaches great importance to clear structures and a precise game idea, which I really appreciate. It is characterized by his calm, factual way that conveys a lot of trust. He gives me the feeling that it is important for the team and supports me in my development. Our relationship is very good – there is an open exchange, and I know exactly what to expect from me, which helps me to bring my performance onto the pitch.<\/p>\n

Transfer market<\/strong>: Around the Osterdeich recently germinated by many followers again by European Cup hopes. Do you think that is realistic? What goals have you set for the second half of the season?<\/p>\n

Old<\/strong>: Sure, the start of the second half of the season was not optimal, and of course that makes it more difficult to talk about international places. But we continue to believe in ourselves as a team. We have shown that we have quality, and if we become more constant in the second half of the season and bring our strengths to the square, a lot can still be possible. For me personally, it is a matter of continuing to accelerate, bringing my services and helping the team to get the best out of the season. In the end we see what it is enough for – but the belief in creating something special is definitely there.<\/p>\n

Transfer market<\/strong>: You have been able to fulfill the long -term dream of the Bundesliga at Werder. What personal goals and perspectives do you still have in football? Is there a kind of career plan?<\/p>\n

Old<\/strong>: Reaching the Bundesliga goal was an important step for me, but I don’t want to rest on it. My goal is to continuously develop me to play at a high level and to be a fixture in the league in the long term. Of course, as a footballer, you also think about proving yourself at some point in the Champions League or maybe in another top league, but that’s still in the future. The focus is now clearly on being successful at Werder and getting the maximum out of me. I don’t have a rigid career plan, but I sit down stages and work hard to reach them every day.<\/p>\n

K\u00f6hn: DFB and Ghana an honor, Werder and Gala exciting<\/h2>\n

Transfer market<\/strong>: In addition to the Germans, they also own Ghanaian citizenship, the Black Stars have already recruited them in the past. Which nation would you like to run for?<\/p>\n

Old<\/strong>: Both nations mean a lot to me and I feel connected to both Germany and Ghana. I am currently fully focusing on my development in the club, and as far as the national team is concerned, I leave everything open. When the time comes, I will consider in peace what is the right step for my career. In any case, it would be an honor for me to open for one of the two nations.<\/p>\n

Old<\/strong>: I feel very comfortable in Bremen and enjoy the time here, both sporty and personally. At the same time, I am grateful to Galatasaray that you have opened this opportunity.
