She handles the word with the subtlety that her teams handle the ball and, although right now she feels halfway between the role of interviewer and interviewee, here we are the ones who ask and she answers.

Player, coach, commentator or analyst or even writer. Natalia Arroyo cannot be conceived without a ball.

They tell you what you are not aware of and apparently it was that profile of a girl who was kicking almost everything she found along the way. Since I can remember I have been imagining games, dribbles, goals and even when I played video games I had a tendency to narrate the games. Life has been taking me, but it is clear that there was something latent. I played for a while, I had fun and I did well until injuries and being aware that my level was not enough to play in Barcelona made me change. I found other ways to live and feel football through fun. First communicating from different roles in the media and then with the bug of training. Now I find myself in a privileged position of being able to choose. I’m enjoying the media part again, but I’m looking forward to being on the bench because it pushes me.

If I had been born 10-15 years later I would have enjoyed professional football.

It’s not a feeling I’ve ever had. I have enjoyed the life in color that I have had to live and I can’t have any complaints. I think those who had it difficult were the women who, from the 1930s to the 1980s, were prohibited from playing football. When I was injured it made me angry, but thanks to that chain of consequences that come later I have been able to work as a journalist. [comenzó en RadioMARCA Barcelona] and the doors of the Catalan Federation first and the Royal Society later opened to me. Having lived through darker and more difficult times has allowed me to be here today. I haven’t been wanting to play anymore, I don’t even get into the rondos when I train even though I know how to play it, eh?[[Laughter].

I’m enjoying the media, but what pulls me is the bench

Natalia Arroyo

Now that you have returned to the media, has your way of analyzing football changed after going through the day-to-day life of a locker room?

In the end it is learning to differentiate that your analysis has to be one regardless of the sympathies or friendships you may have. As time goes by you learn to be more respectful of things. I haven’t changed much, but I’m probably a little taller or I’m more aware of the amount of things that happen during the week and that affect the lineup, the changes, the approach to the game…

She has been one of the first women to comment and analyze football, men’s and women’s. Do you think that because you are a woman, you have had more scrutiny?

Yes, there is quite a bit of that, unfortunately. If the comment was about ‘you are from this team‘ either ‘you encourage this other one more‘, it could happen, but in many cases it automatically happens to throw nonsense at you in relation to what that person thinks you should do because you are a woman. How many times have we not heard about ‘go scrub‘! Although it is increasingly a minority, it is still a difficult and difficult context for women in masculinized and sexist environments such as football. I also think that men’s soccer is much more polarized and women’s soccer, I don’t know if they value the affection with which we can do it or because our posture is kinder by trying to speak positively, it is kinder.

<picture></picture>

Natalia Arroyo, during a visit to ZubietaRoyal Society

He spent four years at Real Sociedad (2019-23) in which he left a good mark.

It was a very good experience and I think that everything that may come from now on will have a lot to do with that stage. Roberto (Olabe) and Garbiñe (Etxeberría) bet on me when I had no experience as a day-to-day coach in a professional club, although I had been working for the Catalan Federation for ten years, and was also the first non-Guipuzcoan coach on the team. I will always be grateful to them for that. I also thank the players for their patience and understanding in meeting a coach who had to manage some situations for the first time. I tried to do my best, the best I knew how at all times, and I learned a lot. I am very satisfied with the mark that we were able to leave, for the commitment to the youth team and for being part of a project that stabilized Real.

The thorn, perhaps, is the two lost finals (Super Cup 2023 and Copa de la Reina 2024) against Barcelona.

The last more than the first. In the Super Cup the feeling is that you can’t compete with Barcelona, but in the Cup, where we had overcome adversity and eliminated teams better than ours like Levante and Atlético de Madrid, we had imagined something else. They took us out of the game with a goal in the 3rd minute and then the result tainted everything a little. I still have the frustration of not having prepared the team better to have extended the dream a little longer in the final, but I am left with the path to get there, which was wonderful. In the end we were only able to add two finals to our record, not counting the Euskal Herria Cups, but we were missing a title.

I ran out of energy because of how I live football, but I have already recovered it

Natalia Arroyo

This year we have not seen her on any bench. Did you want a gap year? Didn’t you have any offers?

I ended up with very little energy because it empties a lot of the way I currently know how to live this, putting my heart and all my hours and body into it. I noticed that I needed to take a breath and put distance. I had some offers that didn’t come to fruition because the projects chose other people. One of the variables I had was that it had to be something that moved me inside. What I would like most is to venture into other leagues, other countries, that pose a greater challenge for me. I feel energized again for when the opportunity arrives.

He talks about clubs and leagues, but coaching a team?

I don’t close myself to anything, but it seems that the world of football is very associated with the fact that you make your career in a team and then the natural step is to go from a club to the national team, the reverse path being very difficult. That fear is what makes me have a couple of projects in clubs and then the national team in my head, but simply because it seems difficult to make the transition the other way around. To me, the national team context seems wonderful, I have already experienced it at the regional level and it is a pleasure to be able to look at so many players and choose the position profile according to the potential you have. And then the championships are very special, 100% adrenaline. I like it, I think it fits with some of the strengths I have and would allow me to learn a lot. We tend to categorize people and it seems that I am not in that market or that there are other coaches better positioned, but there are super challenges. Can you imagine preparing for the Euro Cup or renewing a generation? It would seem like a great opportunity to me.

<picture></picture>

Natalia Arroyo receives the Ramón Cobo Award from Montse ToméRFEF

His name has already been heard as a candidate for the bench of the Spanish team. Did it reach you? Would you like it?

I heard it, but I took it naturally. I try to watch the networks less and less because I am still a person who is affected too much, more than they should, and that is why I try to isolate myself for both the good and the bad. And since the official way, of sitting down and being told that I am an option, has never existed, I have not given substance to that option. The idea of being a coach is something I like. I don’t know if it’s going to happen tomorrow, in 10 years or it’s not going to happen, but I like it. The Spanish team was born and grows in a way of training, competing and living football that I have lived, so a priori it should be easier. Since the option has not been given, I have not stopped much beyond answering these types of questions. I think we have to let the people who are there work and do the best job possible so that, if one day they arrive, we can start from the highest possible position. There is a wonderful generation, the titles have arrived and they will surely continue to arrive.

Your time as a player or coach is linked to Catalonia, but do you imagine yourself coaching a team like Real Madrid in the future?

It is true that the fact that you are politically located somewhere opens and closes doors, but the professional world is what it is and what needs to be analyzed is the style of play that has performed the most in my teams and if that fits. or not with the project you touch. Any challenge that I understand could be a step forward with the experience I have had at Real I would be delighted to hear. What I want to do is continue preparing myself with everything that can help me to do the best possible for this challenge. Barcelona and Real Madrid are the two teams that are setting the tone for the League and would be a wonderful opportunity. We can dream what we want, but it is not something that has happened so far.

Train Real Madrid?
