On Tuesday evening, Shakhtar Donetsk welcomes FC Bayern Munich for a Champions League duel in the Schalke Arena. Sports director Darijo Srna speaks in advance at Transfermarkt about the war situation in Ukraine and its impact on the club.<\/p>\n

The Croatian, who played for Shakhtar as a professional for 15 years, sharply criticizes FIFA for its transfer regulations, talks about the effect on his personal work as a sports director, the transfer strategy in recent years and explains Donetsk’s influence on the Brazilian market. Srna is confident about the showdown with Bayern.<\/p>\n

Transfer market<\/strong>: Due to the difficult political situation, Shaktar has been playing its home games more than 1000 kilometers away from home for 10 years now. How did this have a lasting impact on the club and team as well as on the relationship with fans and spectators?<\/p>\n

Dario Srna<\/strong>: Not playing in your own stadium, in your own city, for ten years is very painful and, let’s say, abnormal. Unfortunately, since 2014, when the war began, our fans live in all countries of the world and we meet them everywhere. But when the war started in full force, things became even more difficult. Every resident of Donetsk, every Shakhtar fan has only one dream: to play in the Donbass Arena. That’s why we’re doing everything we can to achieve this goal – not only for Shakhtar fans, but also for fans of Ukrainian football. Shakhtar is and will always be the flagship of Ukrainian football and we want to present ourselves in Europe with beautiful attacking football and represent Ukraine in the best possible way.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Transfer market<\/strong>: Given the war situation, can there really be something like a \u201cnormal\u201d everyday football life? How do you and the team manage this daily balancing act?<\/p>\n

Srna<\/strong>: We must understand that there are many people in Ukraine who are worse off. Yes, it’s difficult for us to plan, difficult for us to play. But we always know who and why we do this – for every Ukrainian, for every soldier who loves football and who loves Ukraine. We try to convey good, positive emotions when we play in Europe. We want our Ukrainian fans everywhere to be proud of Shakhtar.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Transfer market<\/strong>: You have often spoken in the past about how the club, players and environment have grown together into one big family. How do you help each other off the field?<\/p>\n

Srna<\/strong>: Our very large family has managed to save both the club and the players in recent years. In difficult times it becomes clear what really matters and who you can trust. I would like to say that Shakhtar is, was and will always be a big family. Our president holds them together and tries to make them happy.<\/p>\n

Transfer market<\/strong>: With the war, FIFA created regulations that allowed Ukrainian players to leave their clubs without being transferred. You recently criticized the world association for this. Can you explain the problem for us?<\/p>\n

Srna<\/strong>: Only FIFA can explain the problem, but they don’t. FIFA should exist to protect the club and players in various situations. But she handled it her way. That’s why FIFA didn’t bring anything good to Ukrainian football, unlike UEFA, which tried from day one. FIFA, on the other hand, did nothing. But Shakhtar persevered, Shakhtar survived and will live on.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Transfer market<\/strong>: How has this affected your personal work over the past two years?<\/p>\n

Srna<\/strong>: That gave me even more strength to work together with the coach, the president and the CEO to make Shakhtar strong. We are on the right track. If FIFA thinks that they can take all our players away and weaken us, then that is a very big mistake, because we are Ukrainians.<\/p>\n

Srna explains Shakhtar’s transfer strategy: ‘The market has changed’<\/h2>\n

Transfer market<\/strong>: How do you as a club manage to overcome such a situation and not go under both sportingly and financially?<\/p>\n

Srna<\/strong>: Our DNA means that we don’t know losing. On the financial side, thank God, there is a person like our president who loves Shakhtar, loves Ukraine, loves Donetsk, loves Donbass and respects every Shakhtar fan. That’s why he always helps the club. In addition, we try to play in the Champions League every year and to ensure financial balance with transfers on the entry and exit side.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Transfer market<\/strong>: Donetsk are still by far the most valuable club, their squad is worth twice as much as Dynamo Kyiv. How would you describe the transfer strategy of the past few years?<\/p>\n

Srna<\/strong>: Our transfer strategy is always the same and we continue to be successful with it. We have a bigger squad than Dynamo Kyiv because we have played in the Champions League for the last three years. And unfortunately, without 22 to 23 players and with constant travel, a tight schedule and during the war, it is difficult to maintain a high level. I won’t look at other opponents, we only look at ourselves. We have a clear plan: to form a strong Shakhtar that will also achieve very good results outside of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Transfer market<\/strong>: Donetsk, for example, is known for having regularly brought players from Brazil in the past and turned them into well-known professionals in Europe. Why are they so strong in this market?<\/p>\n

Srna<\/strong>: Because we know how to do it. To be honest, the market has changed in the last 15 years. Now clubs like Manchester City and Chelsea are buying a lot of players, even 16-year-olds. The market is changing and we have to be careful. When an opportunity arises and we are sure that there is incredible talent in Brazil, we have to take it. All Brazilian footballers know Shakhtar; they know how many top players have passed through the club. I think the ideal path for any young player is through intermediate steps before moving to a big club. Benfica, Shakhtar, Porto or Ajax for example. We will continue to pursue this transfer policy.<\/p>\n

Transfer market<\/strong>: After Warsaw and Hamburg in recent years, Donetsk internationally will play its home games at Schalke in 2024\/25. What are your impressions and experiences so far?<\/p>\n

Srna<\/strong>: I have great respect for all these cities, we received a very warm welcome there and there are a lot of Ukrainians there. Nevertheless, our home is in Ukraine, in Donetsk, and I really hope and want us to play there again next year. I wish everyone a quick end to the war, a victory and a return home.<\/p>\n

Transfer market<\/strong>: Finally: How confident are you of making it into the CL playoffs? And why do you have a chance against Bayern on Tuesday?<\/p>\n

Srna<\/strong>: Unfortunately we missed a very big chance against PSV – sometimes we lacked luck, sometimes we lacked concentration. I think with a win against Eindhoven we would have been very close to progressing. Now everything is different. But that’s football. There are three games left to play and anything is possible. Believe me, Shakhtar can beat Bayern and then lose to a team in the Ukrainian championship. This is football and that’s why we love it. But we won’t give up in advance, we’re definitely aiming for a win on Tuesday. Of course, Bayern is one of the strongest clubs in the world, but nobody can write us off before the game. We have at least 90 minutes of good football ahead of us.<\/p>\n
