And sees itself well prepared for the Bundesliga adventure, even though sporting director Andreas Bornemann was not able to implement every plan. Before the away game in Augsburg (Sunday, 3:30 p.m.), the 52-year-old speaks in an interview with Transfermarkt about his view on the poker game for Union Berlin’s midfielder Aljoscha Kemlein (20), the loss of top scorer Marcel Hartel (28), the comparison of new coach Alexander Blessin with predecessor Fabian Hürzeler and acceptable risk for the mission of staying in the league.

Transfer market: Mr. Bornemann, you have been in office since July 2019 and this summer you completed your first transfer period as Bundesliga manager at the Kiezkickers. What is your conclusion?

Andreas Bornemann: What was to be expected has also been confirmed. A large proportion of the “smaller” clubs are dependent on the larger clubs with more opportunities starting transfer activities so that the player market gets going. And these transfers towards deadline day have become less and less in recent years. You hope that the larger clubs will reorganize their squads and that this will give us opportunities to sign players that we would not normally get – but that has not happened to this extent.

Transfer market: How do you explain this?

Bornemann: Clubs that were previously initiators in the transfer market are no longer putting themselves under so much pressure by bringing in new players before letting others go. In the past, two players were signed for a position quite early on and a third became available as a result. That doesn’t happen very often anymore. Perhaps that is also a consequence of the Corona period. There is also a greater focus on loans with purchase options. As a result, late opportunities for clubs like us are becoming increasingly rare. But that didn’t surprise us.

Transfer market: With what consequence?

Bornemann: We said from the beginning that our promotion team is the basis. That’s why we extended contracts early on and had initial discussions. And we didn’t have any significant departures, apart from Marcel Hartel as a regular player. It was about doing something for the depth. Last year, for example, we didn’t have a backup for Manolis Saliakas, and we want to gradually develop Fin Stevens into that. We were very early on with Robert Wagner (announced on June 6; ed.).

Transfer market: After the departure of top scorer Hartel, there was a particular need in the offensive.

Bornemann: It was always clear to us that we wanted to sign a certain type of player for the front row in the Bundesliga, regardless of a coach like Fabian Hürzeler or Alexander Blessin. With Morgan Guilavogui, we probably benefited to some extent from a not so good TV contract in France. Because RC Lens could not qualify for the European Cup this time either, the club had to rely on its own squad. This is a typical example of how it can work.

Bornemann reveals: This is why Kemlein’s transfer to FC St. Pauli fell through

Transfer market: One person who was associated with hope was Aljoscha Kemlein from Union Berlin, who had already played for FCSP in the second half of the season. A transfer fell through shortly before the transfer deadline. All parties were said to have agreed in principle.

Bornemann: That’s a shame. But we have not complained about it publicly in any way. If the Union decides that way, we have to accept it.

Transfer market: Union boss Dirk Zingler told the “Hamburger Abendblatt” a few days before the transfer deadline with regard to the courting of Kemlein: “If those responsible at FC St. Pauli are serious about this, then I’ll go straight to the fax machine and see if an offer has arrived. They shouldn’t just present it verbally, but send something concrete.”

Bornemann: There are many things that surprise us. To begin with, I don’t know many people who still use a fax machine, and we don’t either. (laughs) If such negotiations only take place at the presidential level, I would have had to ask Oke Göttlich to call his fellow president, Dirk Zingler. Contract negotiations usually take place at the operational level between the responsible parties. However, I cannot and do not want to judge how closely communication works at other clubs or how tasks are distributed.

Transfer market: Let’s start from the beginning…

Bornemann: Josch played a lot for Union throughout the preparation period, but in the DFB Cup (in the 1-0 win against Greifswald; ed.) he only came on in injury time. We always kept in touch with him. After the cup weekend, we got the signal that the door could open again. If the option of a loan came up, Josch had a clear preference – St. Pauli. The six months with us helped him a lot. It was a win-win-win situation for him, us and Union. That’s why the story could have been turned around.

Transfer market: What happened next?

Bornemann: Josch spoke to coach Bo Svensson on Tuesday before the last day of transfers. The clear recommendation to Josch was that he should extend his contract first so that he could be loaned out again, because the future belongs to him, not the present. Josch left with the feeling that the final details would be clarified between the clubs on Wednesday. A basic agreement for a loan was reached on Wednesday morning, the agreement was to be put in writing during the morning and Josch was then to travel to Hamburg. And then, within 30 minutes, everything turned into the complete opposite.

Transfer market: Do you have an explanation for this?

Bornemann: I don’t know what happened in Berlin in the meantime. It was Horst Heldt who informed me that they had to withdraw from the loan and that Josch would not be sold after all. That was the end of the matter.

Transfer market: Will there be a second attempt at Kemlein in the winter?

Bornemann: That depends on our development and Josch’s development at Union and only time will tell. It all has to fit together again. Will the situation happen again in winter? I would also need to know what the reason for the cancellation was. We haven’t marked the date in red in our calendar for when we will ask Union.

St. Pauli’s Bornemann on crazy consultant ideas and Hartel’s motives

Transfer market: The Bundesliga also opens up new opportunities for you as a club on the player market. Have you had any crazy contacts or unusual approaches from agents?

Bornemann: Every now and then. Sometimes I’m surprised at the ideas that some agents come to us with. I ask myself whether they have any idea of where our options end, or whether they have looked at our team. We’re a newly promoted team in the Bundesliga, but we’re still a long way from being a Bundesliga team. Some people get that confused. The group of people we consider ourselves to be on the same level as is quite small. And we don’t usually do so-called “agent transfers”. Together with the coach, we define the player profiles that match our game idea. Then the scouting department, led by our chief scout and squad planner Jan Sandmann, identifies and suggests the right players.

Transfer market: But the Bundesliga is also a compelling argument for players.

Bornemann: Robert Wagner, for example, has clearly stated that he wants to take the next step. The Bundesliga was the basic prerequisite for him to choose us in the first place. It was the same with Morgan Guilavogui and one or two of our players who had a very good season last year. Unfortunately, we were not successful with Marcel Hartel. The player and agent’s ideas were not compatible with our economic conditions. But we communicated this very openly and transparently with each other.

Transfer market: Hartel admitted that he was not financially secure over the last few years and that was one of the reasons he went to St. Louis CITY. Can you understand his attitude?

Bornemann: I can totally understand that. Even if it sounds strange, I’m not angry at all. Only a few professionals can say at the end of their career that they can lead their future lives freely and financially independently. Even if “Cello” was one of the top earners at his previous positions and with us, we’re not talking about salaries that allow you to sit back and relax. The working life of a professional doesn’t last 45 years, but is shortened. And not every player completes a degree or prepares early for a future after their football career. They have a responsibility towards their family. That’s why Cello’s thoughts are legitimate and not at all reprehensible.

Transfer market: There is no equivalent one-to-one replacement for him in the squad. A risk?

Bornemann: In the past, when players of equal importance left – Kyereh, Paqarada or Daschner – we have also stressed that either a player from our group has to develop and take the next step, or we have to compensate for departures by adapting our game plan. We have managed to do this in recent years. Now, due to the changed requirements, it will be a matter of working defensively with everything we have and still being a goal threat. The first few games have shown this. It was clear from the start that it made no sense to try to replace Marcel one-to-one.

Blessin is not Hürzeler 2.0: Bornemann’s talks with the new coach

Transfer market: Brighton boss Tony Bloom said he was surprised at how quickly Fabian Hürzeler had settled in at the Seagulls. Their promotion coach was much more committed to Brighton than his predecessor Roberto De Zerbi. What about Hürzeler’s successor Alexander Blessin and his commitment to St. Pauli?

Stanislawski & Co. All head coaches in the history of FC St. Pauli To overview Bornemann: Alex also got involved with the team and the club from day one. In our discussions, I quickly noticed how much he had already thought about the team and individual players. And how we could overcome the great challenge of the 1st Bundesliga together. He was coach of the year in Belgium, and not only won the cup with Union Saint-Gilloise, but also qualified for the Champions League. But choosing to go with FC St. Pauli is a very strong sign.

Transfer market: What distinguishes Blessin in practice from his predecessor Hürzeler?

Bornemann: Of course, there are a few years of experience between the two. But I don’t really want to compare them, because that wouldn’t do justice to either of them. We weren’t looking for a Fabian Hürzeler 2.0. We wanted a coach who had a clear idea of how we could survive in the 1st Bundesliga as a newly promoted team.

Transfer market: 1. FC Heidenheim has had an impressive first Bundesliga season, but had to let their top players Tim Kleindienst and Jan-Niklas Beste go. How is it possible for a newly promoted team to break out of survival mode?

Bornemann: What was impressive about Heidenheim was that they went into the first season with almost the same promoted team – without any “craze” for public perception. Of course, unlike us, they had no change in the coaching position. But we handled this situation as best we could. In order to break out of this “survival mode”, as you call it, you would have to manage to stay in this league for several years at a time, because every year can help you to develop a little bit. But for that to happen, many things have to come together to close the considerable gap to already established clubs.

Transfer market: So is it FCSP’s aim to stay in the league at all costs?

Bornemann: Absolut.

Transfer market: Would a relegation still be taken into account?

Bornemann: I wouldn’t say it’s factored in, but we have to be prepared for it. Everyone in the club knows that. The question is: how much risk can a club take to achieve the goal of staying in the Bundesliga? In order to significantly increase the probability of staying in the league, the club would probably have to take a financial risk in the range of 20 to 30 million. FC St. Pauli cannot and will not do that in this form.

Interview: Philipp Marquardt

Interview with St. Pauli’s sports director ©TM/IMAGO For the first time since 2010/11, FC…

[31

post-2207","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-bundesliga-transfers
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.3.1 -
