Joel Alvarez<\/strong> (20-3) returns to the octagon. The Asturian fighter, nicknamed El Fen\u00f3meno, will fight this Saturday (from 9:00 p.m., opening the main card) in UFC Abu Dhabi. <\/strong>His rival will be the Brazilian Elves Brener<\/strong> (16-4) and although the Spaniard is the favourite, he is not confident. In the lead-up and already in the United Arab Emirates, immersed in the weight cut, he spoke to MARCA.<\/p>\n

Question: How are you preparing for your return to the UFC?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Answer. <\/strong>Well. They told me about my opponent five and a half weeks ago. But Ali had already told me two weeks before that he was going to fight in Abu Dhabi. So, well, I was already preparing myself, I didn’t know who my opponent was, I didn’t know anything. It was a rather generic training until I met him. Also, here in Abu Dhabi we always have good memories. And we know that we wouldn’t have any problems here. The truth is that we’re doing well, very happy. It’s a very good camp and so far everything has gone well. Now, as I say, there’s the ugly part of the weight cut.<\/p>\n

Q. How are you doing?<\/strong><\/p>\n

R. <\/strong>I had four kilos left, so that’s fine. I’m in numbers, I’m the same as last time in London. The same numbers and the weight loss was easy in London. Everything is going well for now but there’s still the last thing left, which is when something can happen: you can get stuck, your body can tell you that’s it… I don’t know, anything. But anyway, in principle I think everything should be going pretty, pretty well, really.<\/p>\n

Q. You mentioned Ali Abdelaziz, your manager and one of the most important MMA fighters in the world. What is your relationship like?<\/strong><\/p>\n

R. <\/strong>The truth is that it’s good. I spoke to him this morning, we were talking and the truth is that it’s good. He’s a cool guy, in the end. The job of manager is good, and then on top of that we have a very good friendship from when I was in Las Vegas, living there, and we trained every day together. He’s more than a manager, I would say. Great relationship.<\/p>\n

Q. How do you analyse your rival? What do you expect from Brener?<\/strong><\/p>\n

R. <\/strong>Well, I would say that my striking is better. Mine is more dynamic, more precise, I would say. And yes, his is stronger, but less precise, less clean. More of a butcher’s striking, and mine more of a surgeon’s.<\/p>\n

Q. You were saying earlier that you have no problems fighting in Abu Dhabi. There were problems fighting in the United States. What about Mexico, Canada…?<\/strong><\/p>\n

R. <\/strong>I don’t know because I’ve never been to those places. In the end I’m a worker and wherever they send me, I’ll have to go… but I’m telling you, if they can send me here, in Europe, Manchester, London, Paris… better. Because for me, for my team, it’s much, much more convenient.<\/p>\n

Q. If he wins, he will go up to 6-2 in the UFC and will once again aspire to the TOP-15 at lightweight.<\/strong><\/p>\n

R. <\/strong>This is a very tough division, but also a very long one. It’s not easy to get in there. You should fight quite often. And you only get in there if you fight someone who is already there, in the top 15. It’s not easy but it’s where we should be, it’s where we deserve to be. We’re going to work hard to try to get back to that ranking.<\/p>\n

Q. Do you feel pressure from being ranked?<\/strong><\/p>\n

R. <\/strong>No, I don’t really feel any pressure. It’s not something that keeps me up at night. But I want to climb the rankings. I’d like to fight 2-3 times a year, work the years I have left in the company. I now see it more as a job than a passion, as I used to.<\/p>\n

Q. What road map do you have for yourself? Is UFC Spain your goal?<\/strong><\/p>\n

R. <\/strong>The first thing is to win this weekend in Abu Dhabi. But yes, I would like UFC Spain… although of course, we don’t know a date yet. We don’t know if it will be at the beginning of 2025 or later. As I told you, I would like to fight 2-3 times a year. Be active. Be functioning… inactivity, of course, is what I take the worst. It killed me, especially mentally, this last year. In the end you prepare one camp, you prepare another… It’s exhausting, but mentally preparing for nothing is like ‘fuck, man’. I want to be active and fight.<\/p>\n

R. <\/strong>Wow… that would be pretty cool. It’s like another 12 weeks or so, yeah… I’d be up for it. Plus, sharing the bill with Ilia would be awesome. It would be awesome to see both of us at that event.<\/p>\n

Q. And out of curiosity, if that hypothesis were to be fulfilled… would there be holidays between fights?<\/strong><\/p>\n

R.<\/strong> Well, I think I would take this August off, especially because I owe it to my family. I’ve been at camp all year because of the two fights that were cancelled and I haven’t enjoyed spending time with my family as much as I would have liked. In the end, you’re always under the tension of fighting. You don’t relax the same way.<\/p>\n

R. <\/strong>Well, look, the truth is that I like that you ask me that because a few days ago, well, just before coming, I took the dog out and man, it’s not just that people know that you’re going to fight, it’s that older people know. They stop me and say: ‘How are you, Joel? Are you ready for the fight on August 3?’ They wish you luck and you see that they really enjoy it. They’re not on social media. They read the newspaper in the morning, they see the local paper. They read something, some news and they come and tell you, man, so that excited me a lot, man, it excited me a lot because I said, damn, how cool. You’re like the champion of the neighborhood, it made me really excited.<\/p>\n
