For the first time in his long and successful career, Cristiano Ronaldo leaves a major international tournament (Euro Cup or World Cup) without scoring a goal. Not counting penalty shootouts, of course, which do not count towards the scoring figures. He started scoring goals at the 2004 Euro Cup in Portugal… and the streak ended 20 years later. A lifetime.
Euro 2004, World Cup 2006, Euro 2008, World Cup 2010, Euro 2012, World Cup 2014, Euro 2016, World Cup 2018, Euro 2020 (played in 2021) and World Cup 2022. He scored at least one goal in each of the tournaments mentioned above. But at Germany 2024 he has not found his way to the net.
The Portuguese, who is the top assist provider in the history of the European Championships with six assists, could have continued the streak if he had scored a penalty against Slovenia… before the shootout. This has possibly been his last European Championship, as at 39 years of age it seems impossible that he will make it to the next one.
Cristiano Ronaldo is also historic in terms of the participations he has had in the European Championship. This was his sixth EURO… 20 years after the first time he appeared in this competition.
