At FC Bologna, the market value of midfielder Lewis Ferguson (25) increased by twelve times within two seasons. During this time, the Scotsman was one of the team’s most important protagonists from the Emilia-Romagna, which sensationally reached the Champions League before this season. It is still uncertain that this succeeds again in the current season. However, Ferguson revealed at the transfer market in Great Britain that he had a taste for it in the premier class. That could now affect its future. It is clear which top league could draw a British footballer.

“It was stunning,” recalls Ferguson when the first participation Bolognas in the premier class had been determined since 1964/65. “It has always been my dream to play in the Champions League, and to achieve that was incredible – also for the club, the employees who have been there for many years, and the fans. Everyone was so happy, and we were so proud to be the team that could be done for Bologna.”

Ferguson, who had moved directly from Scotland from Aberdeen FC to Italy and quickly became a star, does not want to hide the fact that he is now out in more premium class. “You once cost something like the Champions League, you just want more,” says the international. “It was exactly the same feeling when I came through the youth teams at Hamilton and then sniffed in the first team. It is the feeling that you have achieved something; you just want more, then you push yourself, you get more, and at some point the next step. And now we have experienced it all and I have killed all of this.

Ferguson about Premier League: “Would like to test myself”

More Champions League could also mean farewell to Bologna for Ferguson. “I’m happy here and when we play in the Champions League, I would of course like to stay here,” he explains in a variety of ways. Last year Bologna made the leap into the premier class because the Italian league had won a fifth place for the European elite league. This year there is probably no such thing, and as at the end of last season, Bologna is still in fifth place – two points behind Juventus in fourth place. That would only be enough for the Europa League.

Fittingly, Turin is considered the possible next goal of Ferguson, who often had to fit this season often and for a long time, but nevertheless seems to have been outgraded. Juventus was considered a prospect in the past – because the trainer wanted him. Thiago Motta, Ferguson’s ex-coach in Bologna, who was recruited by the Italian record champion last year after the great success with I Veltri, is no longer a coach in Turin. Motta Ferguson wanted to take with him when he went to the old lady. He emphasizes: “Motta has improved me as a team player. I learned a lot in midfield.”

And then it would be the natural goal of Premier League, so to speak. In England, it is certain in England that there should also be interested in Ferguson in the strongest league in the world. And also Ferguson is logically not averse if he does not seem to put himself under pressure in terms of time. He says: “At some point in my career, I would like to test myself. If you grew up in Great Britain and play in Scotland, the next step for a player is the Premier League. For footballers in Scotland, that’s a matter of course. So yes, that is something that I would like to do at some point in my career.”
