The turbulent week around the Europa League game against Olympique Lyon (2-2) and the absurd dispute with opponent Nemanja Matic has sporting effects for Manchester United’s goalkeeper André Onana. On the 32nd matchday, the 29-year-old is not part of the squad against Newcastle United.
This decision by coach Rúben Amorim is surprising, especially because of his statements after the draw on Thursday, which once again did not look good. There the Portuguese had said: “I can’t say André at the moment. What would help him. The most important thing is to continue normally. If the time comes, I will select the best team.”
That best eleven did not include Onana on Sunday at 5:30 p.m., who was hired by Inter Milan for 50.2 million euros in the summer of 2023 and is the fourth most soccer goal in football history. Instead, Altay Bayındır celebrates his premier League debut after almost two years in the club. The change between the posts is apparently not finally. Amorim is primarily concerned with taking Onana out of the line of fire for the time being. The camera will return to the eleven in the second leg against Olympique Lyon next Thursday.
Last week, Onana United had highlighted the much better team compared to OL. “If van der Sar, Schmeichel or de Gea had said that, okay … but Onana is one of the worst,” said Matic. Onana, in turn, noticed on “X”, he did not want to be disrespectful to another club, but pushed after: “After all, I got trophies with the largest club in the world. Not everyone can say that.” Matetic had remained without a title in his United period. Onana won the FA-Cup with the Red Devils last year.
