VfL Bochum wants to present a new sports director until the end of the month, the group of candidates is getting smaller. In this process, the district club has talks with Jörg Schmadtke as “deep in the west-the VfL magazine” and the “Bild”. However, an agreement is not imminent. The 60-year-old did not want to comment on the speculation on “Bild” demand, but also did not deny it.
Schmadtke, who lives in Düsseldorf and most recently worked as a sports director under coach Jürgen Klopp at Liverpool FC in 2023/24, would have a good 20 years in the Bundesliga business. Not only did he work with coach Dieter Hecking at Alemannia Aachen and Hannover 96, but is also said to have a tight connection to the VfL leadership around Managing Director Ilja Kaenzig. The talks are to be continued in the coming days, and in addition to content issues, the salary question should also be clarified.
Since the resignation of ex-sports director Patrick Fabian last summer and the release of ex-sports director Marc Lettau in October, VfL Bochum has been there without sporting leadership. Since then, the most important tasks have been taken over in cooperation between Kaenzig and Hecking.
According to “deep in the west-the VfL-Magazin”, Bielefeld’s sports director Michael Mutzel, with whom discussions are said to have been held, is no longer a candidate in Bochum. The same applies to Oliver Kreuzer and Rachid Azzouzi. Sebastian Schindzielorz, currently sports director at VfL Wolfsburg, is not available for a return. For the Olaf Rebbe, which Hecking from Nuremberg knows from many fans, there was no contact.
