FC Barcelona is on the right track this season after the last season ended without title and brought some turbulence with it. At the forefront of Xavi, which in the meantime announced his resignation in summer, then revised it and then passed through. In an interview with “France Football”, he has now talked about this time and practiced self -criticism.
“I admit that I made some mistakes in my work,” says the 45-year-old, who was replaced by Hansi Flick in the summer. “The departure of (Sergio) Busquets forced us to rethink our style of play. I chose a midfield with three offensive players, but that wasn’t always the best option. ”
In Laliga, Barcelona finished ten points behind Real Madrid, in the Champions League in the quarter-finals against Paris Saint-Germain. “The expectations were very high due to my story with Barça. Maybe my deep emotional bond with the club sometimes harmed me, I was sometimes too emotional, but this experience was a real learning effect for me. ”
Nevertheless, Xavi had decent statistics on his entire time with the Catalans. The Double 2022/23 resulted from 2.07 points per game over 143 games in more than two and a half years. “If you look at our balance sheet – and I get into my coaching staff – it is very positive,” the Spaniard defended himself. “Because the club was in one of its worst phases in its history, maybe even worse than at the beginning of the millennium.”
Ex-Barça trainer Xavi ready again for new tasks
Nine months have now passed since Xavi left Barcelona. Enough time to be open to a new task again. He emphasized that he had not committed anything specific. “Why not train another Laliga team?” Asked Xavi rhetorically. “I am looking for an exciting project and I have the ambition to win titles. That is the main goal. I will listen to the various offers. ” When asked what titles it should be, he replied: “The Champions League, the EM, the World Cup.” A national team would also be an option for the former 133-time Spanish international.
