“This time I could really only smile,” Sebastian Hoeneß had recently asked about reports that the coach of VfB Stuttgart had brought into play as candidates at RB Leipzig. Again and again the name of the 42-year-old falls when a top club is looking for a new head coach. VfB is also aware of how covet Hoeneß is on the market, which apparently prepares for all eventualities in the background and thus also for a departure.
According to “Sky”, SC Paderborns Lukas Kwasniok is also one of the options that the Swabians examine as potential successors for the coming season. The 43-year-old has been a coach of the second division club since 2021 and should be open to the next step in his career, preferably in the Bundesliga. For him, it could become an advantage that he has already worked with sports director Fabian Wohlgemuth. Both know each other from times at the SCP, in which Wohlgemuth was a sports director from May 2020 to December 2022.
In addition to VfB, other Bundesliga clubs are also said to observe the situation of Kwasniok. So far, however, there have been no concrete conversations because he first wants to concentrate on the promotion race with the East Westphalia. Before the 25th matchday, Paderborn was fourth in the table. Another candidate at VfB, who is closer, is said to be Matthias Jaissle from Al-Ali SFC. His contract, like that of Kwasniok, is valid until 2026, so a transfer would be due for both.
VfB Stuttgart: Hoeneß has exit clause
According to the report, Hoeneß has not yet given Stuttgart a definitive yes or no, whether he will continue to sit on the coaching bench next season. Although it has a working paper by 2027, it should be included, but an exit clause, which can be activated up to around May 10 and is in the range of 8 million euros.

In the transfer market interview, it asked how high the likelihood is that Hoeneß 2025/26 VfB coach was, CEO Alexander Wehrle in mid-February: “Questions about Sebastian future were also asked in the past spring. I see it as an award for his work that a lot is written and speculated about him. Of course I get that. For me, however, it is crucial what he tells us in a personal conversation. He is fully focused on VfB and totally integrated into planning the new season. With his contract extension, he made a clear commitment to VfB and I assume that we will work with him for a long time. ”
