The salary costs at FC Bayern, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig have increased last year-even more at BVB than with almost all European top 20 teams. As by far the most generous club is still enthroned by PSG at the head of the salary ranking, which can be seen from the UEFA financial report for 2024. The Parisians paid more than Bavaria and Leipzig for wages.
According to the UEFA report, BVB paid 269 million euros last year for salaries from players, coaches and all other jobs in the club. This is an increase of 14 percent compared to 2023. In the top 20 of the clubs with the highest salary costs, only three have recorded a stronger increase than the black and yellow: AS ROM (+16 %), Aston Villa (+33 %) and arsenal (+41 %). Dortmund is in eleventh place in the list of expenditure, FC Bayern is sixth with EUR 430 million (+3 %) and RB Leipzig landed 17th with EUR 202 million (+5 %).
With three teams, the Bundesliga has as many representatives in the top 20 as the Spanish Laliga. Real Madrid overtook FC Barcelona with an increase of twelve percent to EUR 505 million, which according to the strict requirements of the Spanish Association made salary cuts by a good quarter (€ 476 million). From Italy there are four clubs in the top 20 ranking, from the Premier League it is nine. Six of the English representatives are even listed in the top 10, where FC Bayern behind Liverpool (449 million) is still placed in front of Manchester United (429 million). The only salary shampion of PSG is represented from the French Ligue; The club, financed by the Qatarian sports investment fund, increased his salary costs by seven percent to EUR 658 million. That is 314 million euros more than the average of the top 20 (344 million).
UEFA boss Severin: salary increases for players “responsible”
The UEFA numbers also show that the player salaries, which have the largest proportion of the total costs, have increased significantly weaker with a view to all clubs in the association than those from other employees. Expenditures for salaries of professionals increased by four percent, 16 percent that the coaches and technical staff in the sporting field. The salary in all other areas is given as an increase of eleven percent. The sum of the employees grew by six percent. All salary categories are significantly higher than before corona pandemic.
“While most clubs seem to deal responsibly with the salary increases for players, other costs rapidly increase and exert greater pressure on operational margins than ever before. The clubs have to remain vigilant because there is still considerable work to restore profitability before pandemic, ”said Uefa boss Aleksander Ceferin. The association estimates the increase in operational costs for the clubs to plus twelve percent.
