Transfermarkt has updated the market values of the Chinese Super League and re-evaluated a total of 441 players. The Argentinian Matías Vargas from the newly crowned champions Shanghai Port is now the sole most valuable professional after an increase of 500,000 euros with a new market value of 5 million euros. The 27-year-old left winger had previously shared the top spot with his teammate Oscar and Taishans Cryzan. While the latter remains at 4.5 million euros, the Brazilian veteran has to accept the sixth loss in a row after what was probably his last season in China.
Oscar, whose contract in Shanghai expires at the end of the year, is the second biggest loser of the update with a market value loss of 500,000 euros. Only his compatriot Thiago Andrade, loaned to Shenzhen Peng City from New York City FC, receives a higher devaluation of one million euros. With 4 million euros, Oscar now has only a tenth of his former career high of 40 million euros. The 33-year-old was assessed for this almost ten years ago during his time at Chelsea FC. In 2017, he moved to the Chinese Super League for 60 million euros, which was investing heavily in international stars at the time. Since then, the 48-time national player has played 248 games in which he scored 77 goals and added 141 more for Shanghai.
Oscar has been linked with a return to his former club Internacional for some time. In the past season, with 38 scorers, he was once again the second best player in the CSL ranking behind teammate Lei Wu (49 scorer points), who, despite strong statistics, is still valued at 1.2 million euros due to his age. Vargas, who moved from Barcelona to Shanghai in 2022 for a fee of 4 million euros, will increase his market value by one million euros within a year. The 1.68 meter tall winger had 26 scorers in 28 games last season. The future of the two-time Argentina international is also open as his contract expires at the end of the year.
There are also bigger upgrades for left-back Yahav Gurfinkel from CD Rongcheng (+700,000 to 1.2 million euros), Léo, who was loaned to ZJFC by Taishan (26 scorers; from 3.5 to 4 million euros) and the Italian center forward Andrea Compagno by TJ Jinmen Tiger. The latter scored 17 goals in his first CSL season and increases from 3 million to 3.5 million euros. The biggest winner of Transfermarkt’s December update is his teammate Albion Ademi. The right-footer, who came from Sweden’s IFK Värnamo in February, played for the sixth-place team. all 30 league games and was in the starting line-up 29 times. The Albanian has nine goals and new assists to his credit.
With his increase, he also contributes to TJ Jinmen Tiger recording the largest increase in terms of squad value with 1.43 million. However, there is no change in the top three ranking of the most valuable squads, with champions Shanghai ranking with 18.36 million euros, ahead of SD Taishan (13.09 million euros) and SH Shenhua (11.78 million euros).
This is how transfer market market values work
The transfer market market values are created taking into account various pricing models as well as a strong involvement of the transfer market community, which deals with the values in detailed discussions. The transfer market market values cannot generally be equated with the transfer fees actually paid.
The goal is not to predict a price, but rather an expected value. When determining the market value, both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant to a certain extent. Examples of this are listed here. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (for detailed market value definition).
