Former Werder captain Niklas Moisander is ending his active career at the age of 39. The central defender left Bremen in the summer of 2021 after five years and moved to Sweden to Malmö FF, for whom he was only able to play three games this year due to an arm injury and a torn cruciate ligament.
“They were very hard days. Now in the fall I have had a lot of time to think and have decided that enough is enough. It’s time for me to hand over to younger talent and end my football career. A decision that was not easy for me,” explained Moisander. “It’s hard for me to find words at the moment, there are a lot of emotions going through my body. I left Finland at the age of 17 and since then I have experienced good and bad times, like anyone who has a long career. It was a dream to play football and an honor to have been captain of the Finnish national team.”
Moisander left his homeland for the Netherlands, where he won three championship titles with AZ Alkmaar and Ajax Amsterdam. After a season at Sampdoria Genoa in Italy, he joined Werder in 2016, for whom he played 142 games (three goals). Moisander celebrated three more championships with Malmö. He appeared in 62 international matches for Finland and was named Footballer of the Year in his homeland in 2012 and 2013.
