20 years of market values at TM

Although Carlo Ancelotti had to resign from FC Bayern after just six match days, there was no tension in the 2017/18 Bundesliga season, as in previous years. Jupp Heynckes’ friendship for Uli Hoeneß led the Munich team to their sixth championship title in a row with a 21-point lead. While the video evidence introduced a novelty, an era came to an end: founding member HSV was relegated for the first time after 55 years in the upper house.
As part of the 20th anniversary of market values at Transfermarkt, we are taking a look at the most valuable professionals of each season since 2004 in a series. There was still no getting past the stars of FC Bayern in 2017/18. Nine places in the most valuable eleven are occupied by the record champions. Only Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who literally forced his transfer from BVB to Arsenal in the winter, and Naby Keïta from RB Leipzig made it into the top eleven with 65 million euros each.

In addition to high-flyer Keïta, who increased his market value by 38 million euros over the course of the season, Munich’s Robert Lewandowski also reached his career high with a Bundesliga record value of 90 million euros and Mats Hummels with 60 million euros. In addition, Bayern professionals David Alaba, Joshua Kimmich, Thiago Alcántara, Jérôme Boateng and Manuel Neuer retained their place from last year, while Niklas Süle and James Rodríguez, like Keïta, moved into the top eleven.
The record champions, who dominate the Bundesliga and failed in the Champions League semi-finals against Real Madrid (1:2/2:2) and lost in the cup final against Eintracht Frankfurt (1:3), penetrated into new market value spheres in 2017/18 . FC Bayern’s squad value increased by almost 250 million euros and reached the 800 million mark at the end of the season, which was broken for the first time shortly afterwards in the following season.
Bundesliga 2017/18: Schalke 04 and VfB Stuttgart among market value winners
Aside from Bayern, FC Schalke 04 and returnees VfB Stuttgart were among the winners of the season. The Royal Blues became runners-up under Domenico Tedesco, and the squad value subsequently increased by almost 100 million euros to almost 260 million euros. Leon Goretzka, Schalke’s most valuable player, increased by 17 million euros to 40 million euros and moved to Munich for a free transfer after the season. It was the last highlight before the Knappen had to face the sporting decline and end up in the relegation battle of the 2nd Bundesliga. Today S04 only has a tenth of the squad size it used to have.
20 years of MARKET VALUES – The success story of Transfermarkt
VfB Stuttgart surprised with a strong defense and only conceded 36 goals, fewer than any Bundesliga promoted team before. The season also marked the big breakthrough for Benjamin Pavard, whose market value jumped from 3.5 million to 30 million euros. A year later he too would move to FC Bayern. The Swabians narrowly missed out on international business in seventh place, only to be relegated the following season. Hoffenheim, however, reached the premier class for the first time under Julian Nagelsmann in third place.
After HSV narrowly avoided relegation in 2014 and 2015, the legendary stadium clock that showed the Rothosen’s Bundesliga membership stopped on the last matchday after 54 years, 261 days, zero hours, 36 minutes and two seconds. The Hamburg team was able to win against Gladbach (2:1). In the long-distance duel, rival VfL Wolfsburg also secured three points against Cologne, who had already been relegated (4:1), and sealed the relegation of the Bundesliga giants, who have narrowly missed their return year after year since then.
While Filip Kostić and Walace broke new ground, three of the five most valuable HSV players, Fiete Arp, Kyriakos Papadopoulos and Douglas Santos, remained loyal to their club. Relegation meant the end of Dennis Diekmeier’s time in the Bundesliga. With 203 appearances, he broke the negative record in 2017/18 for the most games by an outfield player without scoring a single goal, which still stands today.
Most expensive Bundesliga transfers 2017/18: BVB sets standards with Dembélé
When it comes to transfers, Borussia Dortmund in particular caused a stir. After an outstanding debut season, Ousmane Dembélé went on strike to FC Barcelona in the summer of 2017, but at least brought BVB a windfall of 135 million euros including bonuses – the highest transfer fee in Bundesliga history to date. In the winter, Aubameyang’s indiscipline and poor training performance also forced his €63.75 million move to Arsenal. The behavior of the two professionals sparked a public debate across Germany about the power relationship between professionals and clubs.
Dortmund reinvested the transfer fees in, among others, Andriy Yarmolenko, Manuel Akanji and Maximilian Philipp, but also in the still unknown Jadon Sancho. Despite a strong start, things quickly didn’t go well under new coach Peter Bosz. The Black and Yellows remained winless in the Champions League and in the Bundesliga their arch-rivals Schalke became only the second team to make up for a 4-0 deficit in the Revierderby. After eight games without a threesome, Bosz had to leave in December; successor Peter Stöger was at least able to lead Borussia into the premier class. Meanwhile, Bayern made the most expensive addition in the club’s history to date with Corentin Tolisso for 41.5 million euros.
