The Brazilian first division club Fluminense has announced the termination of the contract with left-back Marcelo (36) by mutual agreement. The club communicated this decision after a dispute in the last league game against Grêmio (2:2) between the five-time Champions League winner and coach Mano Menezes.
Marcelo’s contract was valid until the end of December 2024. Fluminense, which is fighting against relegation this season, reiterated in its statement that “the institutional and emotional connections” will continue to be maintained. Since his return, Marcelo has won the Copa Libertadores, the Recopa Sudamericana and the Rio de Janeiro State Championship.
Marcelo, who was born in Rio, started his career with Fluminense in 2005 and moved to Real Madrid in 2007. In 2023, the veteran returned to Fluminense after a short stint at Olympiakos Piraeus.
