Following the sacking of coach Erik ten Hag, Manchester United have reportedly identified a favorite to replace the Dutchman. As The Athletic reports, the Red Devils are working on signing Rúben Amorim from Sporting Lisbon. The Portuguese is said to be ready to take the chance for the position at the Premier League club, reports the portal, citing Portuguese sources. “A Bola” confirmed the report with its own information.

According to the report from England, Man United is ready to pay the €10 million (£8.3 million) release clause in Amorim’s contract, which is valid until 2026. In Portugal, however, it is reported that foreign clubs would have to put 20 million euros on the table in order to be able to get rid of the coach. It would be another ten million euros more for domestic clubs. In any case, Amorim would become one of the most expensive trainers in the world. The ranking is led by Julian Nagelsmann and Graham Potter, whose moves to FC Bayern and Chelsea respectively cost 25 million euros.

The 39-year-old Amorim has been in office since March 2020 and was considered a promising candidate to succeed Jürgen Klopp at Liverpool FC in the spring, before Feyenoord’s Arne Slot made the race. Negotiations between United and Sporting are now underway, it is said. Amorim is still considered one of the most sought-after young coaches in Europe.

As an interim solution, the English record champions Man United decided on assistant coach Ruud van Nistelrooy, who will be supported by the existing coaching team while they look for a new boss. Ex-Barcelona coach Xavi and long-time national coach Gareth Southgate were recently considered possible successor candidates. After the fourth defeat of the season, the club pulled the ripcord on ten Hag, who is only 14th in the Premier League table with the Red Devils. Only once, in 2019/20 under Ole Gunnar Solskjær, did United start a season weaker in the history of the English top flight.

The Guardian names Brentford’s Thomas Frank alongside Amorim as another option being traded at Old Trafford. The 51-year-old Dane has held his position since October 2018, making him the longest-serving trainer in the Premier League after Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola.
