After six years

Fabian Herbers will be looking for a new challenge after six years at Chicago Fire FC. The 31-year-old’s contract, which expires at the turn of the year, will not be extended. After the end of the regular season and missing the playoffs, Herbers has already been officially farewelled by the MLS club. Now he is ready for a new adventure.
“I’m open to everything,” Herber told the “Münsterland Zeitung” and is looking, among other things, at Europe: “The 2nd Bundesliga is more interesting than ever, but I’m not just looking at Germany. The Netherlands or Belgium would also be interesting.” The offensive player last played in Germany for VfL Rhede in 2013 before joining the Bluejays at Creighton University.
After a total of twelve and a half years in America, the chances of an interesting offer overseas are still higher, says Herbers. “Since I spent my entire professional career in the USA, my market is simply bigger here.” In addition, the upcoming World Cup in 2026 creates other opportunities: “This is of course a good time to grow the soccer wave in the USA a little more ride. You can just see how football continues to grow here.”
Herbers on Chicago Fire: “Was here for 6 years and we never made the playoffs”
He looks back on his time at Chicago, where Herbers earned around $420,000 in the final year of his contract, with mixed feelings. “I was here for six years and we never made the playoffs,” he summed up and, with a view to the upcoming upheaval surrounding former American national coach Gregg Berhalter, said: “If you leave now and the club is successful, then it hurts , even if it’s not your fault. I played a lot of games and did well, especially in the first half of the season.” I have three goals and four assists after 30 games.
