In the 2004/05 season, FC Bayern won the double and dethroned Werder Bremen led by playmaker Johan Micoud, who secured Champions League qualification four points behind Schalke and one ahead of Hertha BSC (see table). SC Freiburg had to go to the 2nd Bundesliga as bottom with 18 points, followed by VfL Bochum and Hansa Rostock. As part of the 20th anniversary of market values at Transfermarkt, we take a look at the most valuable Bundesliga professionals of the 2004/05 season.

The most valuable player was Bayern’s Michael Ballack with a market value of 30 million euros, who scored 13 goals in the Bundesliga and was therefore one of the top performers on the way to the championship. Behind Ballack were Hertha’s Marcelinho and FCB striker Roy Makaay, who were valued at 20 million euros. While the Dutchman came second in the top scorers list with 22 goals behind Marek Mintál (market value at the time: 7.5 million), Hertha’s playmaker contributed 31 goals in 32 games and secured fourth place for his team.

In addition to Ballack and Makaay, four other Bayern professionals made it into the most valuable eleven: Zé Roberto (15 million), Sebastian Deisler (15 million), Oliver Kahn (14 million) and Lúcio (16 million). Runner-up Schalke was represented by Marcelo Bordon (12.5 million), who had the highest market value of his career in 2004/05. The latter also applies to the then national player of VfB Stuttgart, Andreas Hinkel (11 million), who was the most valuable full-back in the league ahead of BVB professional Dedê (9.5 million).

In total, the most valuable Bundesliga team of the 2004/05 season had a market value of 181 million euros, which is below the current market values of Erling Haaland and Vinicius Junior.
