FC Bayern and VfB Stuttgart will meet for the 161st time on Saturday evening. Many players have changed sides between the two clubs in the history – VfB sent eleven professionals to Munich, the record champions let 15 move to the Swabians. In total there are 35 players who played for both teams.

Philipp Lahm, who comes from Bayern’s youth team but made his Bundesliga debut in 2003 for VfB under Felix Magath, played the most games. In 2003/04 and 2004/05 the full-back was part of the “Junge Wilden” in Stuttgart, where he not only took his first steps in the professional field on loan but also became a national player. 71 games with the breast ring were followed by 517 for Bayern, in which he is ninth in terms of most appearances.

Mario Gómez changed sides several times. FC Bayern paid 30 million euros for the striker’s services in the summer of 2009 after he shot VfB to third place with 24 goals. Until 2019, he was the most expensive sale in VfB history, before he was replaced by Benjamin Pavard, who also went to Munich for 35 million euros. Gómez returned again in 2018 before ending his career in 2020. In total, he scored 110 times in 230 games for Stuttgart and 113 times in 174 games for Bayern.

Aside from Gómez, no other professional has scored three-digit goals for both clubs. Dieter Hoeneß (145 goals), Dieter Brenniger (140) and Giovane Élber (139) achieved this for Bayern, but not for Stuttgart; at VfB, Jürgen Klinsmann (94) was the only player who was active for both clubs to come close to the mark .

Leon Dajaku received the fewest appearances for both clubs. The striker, who now plays for Hajduk Split in Croatia, was able to get a taste of the Bundesliga in Stuttgart twice in 2018/19 before FCB secured the talent. There, too, the final breakthrough did not materialize; after a year and a half there were only three competitive games for the Munich team. At both clubs he remained without a goal.

The direct clash on Saturday evening will feature four players who were active on both sides: Sven Ulreich at FC Bayern and the two loan players Alexander Nübel and Frans Krätzig as well as Angelo Stiller at VfB Stuttgart.
