Raphael Varane is hanging up his boots. The French centre-back himself announced it in a message posted on Instagram in which the 2018 World Cup winner says ‘enough’ at 31 years of age and after his short and unsuccessful spell at Cesc Fabregas’s Como. A recent injury has reportedly precipitated his decision to leave football.

“I’ve fallen and gotten up a thousand times, and this time it’s time to stop and hang up my boots after my last game where I won a trophy at Wembley,” he explains, referring to his victory with Manchester United in the FA Cup final in the spring, before his move this summer to Como in Italy, with whom he has only played one game. Varane has played for Lens (2010-2011), Real Madrid (2011-2021), Manchester United (2021-2024) and Como (2024).

His trophy cabinet includes four Champions Leagues (2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018), three European Super Cups (2014, 2016, 2017), four Club World Cups (2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018), three La Liga titles (2012, 2017 and 2020), one Copa del Rey (2014), two Spanish Super Cups (2017 and 2020), one FA Cup (2024) and one League Cup (2023). His international honours include one World Cup (2018) and one Nations League (2021).
