Davy Klaassen originally wanted to keep fit at his youth club Ajax Amsterdam after his contract with Inter Milan expired. But the 31-year-old midfielder seems to have convinced Ajax coach Francesco Farioli. The former Bremen player signed a contract until the end of the season. For the former Bundesliga professional, it is the third time that the Dutch record champions have brought him into the professional team.
After Klaassen captained Ajax to the Europa League final in 2017, where they lost 2-0 to Manchester United, Everton paid 27 million euros for him. A disappointing year with 16 appearances later, he went to Werder Bremen for half of his time, where he played two seasons before returning to Ajax. In 2023, he spent a year at Inter Milan, where he won the league title but rarely played.
Klaassen had his most successful time in Amsterdam. He won the Dutch championship five times and was involved in 143 goals in 321 games. He had his highest market value in Bremen in 2019, when he was valued at €22 million.
This season, Ajax generated revenues of €57 million through the sales of Steven Bergwijn (€21 million/Al-Ittihad), Georges Mikautadze (€13 million/Metz) and Francisco Conceição (€10.5 million/Porto), among others. This was offset by expenditures of just €2.38 million for the transfer of Wout Weghorst from Burnley FC. In addition to Weghorst, two other new signings came in: Bertrand Traoré and Daniele Rugani.
