With a market value of 25 million euros, Mario Hermoso is the second most valuable clubless footballer in the world. This status will apparently change soon. The 29-year-old central defender is about to move to AS Roma. The former Atlético professional, whose contract was not renewed after five years, is said to have already completed the first part of the medical check, and the second will follow on Monday before the contract is signed.
Hermoso will be offered a contract with the Giallorossi until 2027, with the possibility of ending the collaboration as early as 2026. With his market value, the Spaniard becomes the third most valuable new signing without a transfer fee in the history of the Roma club, only Paulo Dybala and former Frankfurt player Evan Ndicka were valued higher when they arrived for free.
Coach Daniele De Rossi confirmed the defender’s arrival to “DAZN” on Sunday evening. “Someone who hasn’t played for a while will be coming. I don’t know if I was allowed to say that… but well, Hermoso is coming.” Before the end of the transfer window on Friday, everything looked like Kevin Danso would be signed, before the transfer surprisingly fell through after the medical check.
Hermoso, who is leaving his homeland for the first time in his club career, will be the Romans’ tenth new signing this summer and the second free transfer. In total, the club spent 91.1 million, which only three clubs in Serie A can beat. On the income side, the figure is just 18 million euros.
