Liverpool FC has secured the services of Giorgi Mamardashvili, the world’s joint most valuable goalkeeper with a market value of €45 million. According to media reports, the 23-year-old Georgian will cost the Reds €30 million plus €5 million in bonuses, making it the club’s first transfer spending of the summer. He is said to have signed a contract until 2031 (there were no official reports on this at first), but will remain on loan at Valencia FC until summer 2025. Mamardashvili now shares sixth place in the ranking of the most expensive goalkeepers, including bonuses, with Thibaut Courtois (2018; Real Madrid) and Jasper Cillessen (2019; FC Barcelona).

In the summer of 2021, Mamardashvili came to Valencia on loan from Dinamo Tbilisi and was signed permanently six months later for 850,000 euros. Since the 2022/23 season, he has been the regular goalkeeper for the Spanish club and has increased his market value by 35 million euros. In 102 games, the Georgian European Championship driver kept 31 clean sheets and attracted attention with strong performances at the European Championship in Germany. In the summer of 2023, when the return of Manuel Neuer (38) to the FC Bayern goal was not foreseeable, the Munich team had their eye on Mamardashvili.

It is not yet clear whether there will be a duel between him and Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson (31), whose contract runs until 2027. Last year, the Brazilian, whom Liverpool signed from AS Roma for a then record fee of 62.5 million euros, was courted by clubs from Saudi Arabia. When the first rumors about Mamardashvili’s signing arose, he was confronted with them and explained: “You are doing the right thing, but for my part, I will stay as long as I have my contract here and as long as I am happy here, the club is happy with me, my family is happy here.”
