Dawid Kownacki may soon be leaving SV Werder Bremen. The 27-year-old attacker did not take part in the Green-Whites’ final training session before the first round match in the DFB Cup against Energie Cottbus on Monday (6 p.m.). SVW announced that the Pole is “in talks about a move to another club.” Kownacki will therefore not be part of the cup squad. A return to Fortuna Düsseldorf is apparently imminent.
Update 19:00: Fortuna Düsseldorf coach Daniel Thioune confirmed on Sunday that Kownacki is about to return to his old stomping ground. However, details still need to be clarified. The “Bild” newspaper had previously reported on the Rhinelanders’ efforts to secure a loan with an option to buy. Kownacki had decided in 2023 not to extend his expiring contract with F95. The Pole, who was signed from Sampdoria for a club-record transfer fee of €6.75 million after a previous loan, scored 28 goals in 102 games for Düsseldorf and also provided 17 assists.
The fact that Kownacki is about to leave is not surprising, as he has only played a supporting role at the Weser since his free transfer from Fortuna Düsseldorf a year ago. The right-footer played 22 competitive matches for Werder, but only played 364 minutes of them and did not score a goal. His contract in Bremen runs until 2026. In June, rumours linked Kownacki with HSV and FC Copenhagen.
